accuracy of bmi when applied to endomorph, ecto, meso etc..

it is accurate enough, but bmi is an aggregate measure and can be made to break down with any arbitrary subset of the population.

if you want a really accurate 1 factor measure that applies to everyone try this: reach down next to your navel and pinch the fat between your thumb, forefinger and abdominal wall. If you have more than 30mm of blubber in between, you need to loose weight.

Ray I'm not sure about that test either, unless I did it wrong. I was able to pull out about 35mm without pulling to hard.
I do NOT need to loose weight. If anything I need to gain weight. Now maybe I could stand to rebuild my muscle tone again (used to almost have sixpack). But definitely not loose weight. I'm 6'3" and ~170lbs maybe a few lbs more.

sorry for the brief description. you are not pulling out, merely pinching the fat (lightly) between your thumb and forefinger. The measure is between your thumb and forefinger. It is a version of the old "pinch an inch" measure.

I was spending about 6 hours a week lifting weights at the gym and taking absolutely no supplements. I was nowhere near a bodybuilder. Even my friends that don't regularly lift weights but are in decent shape are overweight on that scale. If you have any muscle at all, or you're not a naturally very thin build, you're going to be overweight on that scale. I think it's terrible that someone with poor self-esteem might get the idea that there is something wrong with them because of that nonsense.
It probably is correct for 99% of the crack addict population though.

Ah ..a prime example....(not directed at you ..just the "exempts" who have delusions of granduer)

..and I'd venture to say that you've got around or over a 36" inseam.

I'm 6'1" and have a 30.5" inseam and have a 9 1/2 H foot (to truly be properly fitted I would have to go to a prescriptioin shoe store). I'm a tall dwarf ..like many of my heritage.

You on the other hand ...can probably live a totally sedentary life and get no more than a pot belly and even if you go into total neglect ..will never ever be considered "a tub of lard"..

..how can this be so for you ..and not for more substantial beings? They can walk just like you do ..or sit on thier a$$ like you do ..you can eat and expend no energy ..and still be the guy that I tossed around under the boards at will ..and I'll gain weight.

..but I'm a lazy sack of crap (to quote some member on another post)

..and you're totally in control of your body..

No genetic or metabolic predespositions?? Yeah right ..it's all in your lean jeaners superior mastery of your life...

Perhaps we can ask how many of you would have had the capacity to compete with a "tub of lard" in any arena of the "tub of lard's" choice ..before they were a "tub of lard".

I was jogging two miles a day to get in shape. I wasn't out for a time trial ..just getting a good 20 minute cardiac work out. One of my brother inlaw's friend was there and asked me how fast I did it.. I said 20 minutes. He in his "praternally endorced" ******* contest goes "Humph...I can do that in under 14 minutes" (he had all the weight of a young Bill Gates). I said ..would you like to have a race of who can push the Buick to the end of the driveway ...or one where each of us is carrying a 100 lb sack?

He declined. I also offered him a boxing or wrestling match for bragging rights. He also declined.

******* contests and the mentality that inspires such attitudes ...you guys should be more grown up to have to spit on others to make yourselves feel good about yourselves.

Perhaps we should have a thread on over developed egos and the underpinnings that made them "super sized". Shall we delve into the emotional and mental strate and substrata that inspires one person to gloat over the shortcomings of others??

On the other hand, people may make comments about how skinny he is, and perhaps even use that oh-so-nice term "lanky" to describe him:

Main Entry: lanky
Pronunciation: 'la[ng]-kE
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): lank·i·er; -est
: ungracefully tall and thin
synonym see LEAN
- lank·i·ly /-k&-lE/ adverb
- lank·i·ness /-kE-n&s/ noun

Is the grass really greener on the other side?

This documentary was truly a PGO (Penetrating glimpse at the obvious)...If one does not understand that eating at mcdonalds three times a day can have serious health consequences that person most likely needs printed instructions to breathe, that is if they can read!

Its a waste of video---

Just a note here. The weight tables vs height used by insurance companies and the military were compiled in the 1930's. Does the great depression ring a bell? People were thin because they did'nt get enough to eat.
Funny one;
While in Chicago last year for a family reunion we saw a truck on the street from a company advertising that they specialized in products for the morbidly obese. Anotherwords If you don't tip the scales at 400lbs and above, don't bother to call them!

Met life tables were updated in 1983,
http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/met.htm
Which still doen't make them a particularly good guide, particularly for tall people of muscular people.

I know the military human factors data data is revised every few years, although I don't know if they change their general purpose weight charts that frequently.
