Suggestions on new truck tires

Hello, all.

I need to replace the tires on my '97 F350 4-wheel pickup truck soon. The size is 235/85 R16, "E" load range or 10-ply.

Are there any tires for consumers? The popular recommendations in that size were commercial tires, like Transforce or Commercial T/A. I do a little bit of everything on my truck.

I've been selling tires for 14 years. There's a lot of good choices but need to narrow your selection a bit.

May be too aggressive for you, but this morning got a set of toyo open country at2's put on my truck. Ten ply E rated. Super smooth and quiet on pavement. Very good in sand as well. Coming from bfgoodrich AT's in D load, I expected a harsher ride but it is quite the opposite.

I have the same truck that I bought new... I have almost 300K miles on her now. You can imagine how many sets of tires this truck has had lol. Last year I had a set of Michelin LTX M/S's (the "older" tread design, not the new LTX A/T2 design) installed and they have been BY FAR the best tires EVER on the truck. What a nice ride, and traction in all weather has been above average. I also tow heavy trailers and the stability while towing is excellent. Every other brand of tires also required several and large wheel weights per tire. The Michelins were so close only 3 required some small weights and one balanced out to zero without any weights! They were certainly worth the small amount of extra $.

On the other side of the spectrum, the worst set were Pirelli Scorpions. They were never balanced even after multiple attempts, wore out very quickly, and the traction on wet or snowy roads was downright scary.

+1 have the LTX M/S2 on my F150, by far the best tire I ever had on the truck

Either A/T or highway will be fine.

Can't really set a budget, I'm doing this during labor day sales weekend where they usually have such good deals on tires/shocks. I'm buying whatever is the best deal.

Toyo Wild Country looks good. I just watched a youtube ad of it. I like the look. I live in the mid-atlantic area where snow isn't enough of a concern. I can't remember driving the truck in sand ever.

Dunno if they're still in stock...but probably not. If I were to get a really good deal on LTX AT2, maybe.

I've had great service from Toyo. The new at2's are really nice. Michelin truck tires are hard to beat IF you can find them at a deal. I would not spend over $100 more on Michelins than what you could get Toyo's for. It's probably going to be hard to find Toyo's on sale but they are usually at a good price anytime.
Nitto is another good brand.....Toyo is the parent company of nitto.
My father in law has the Toyo's and loves them.

I would stay away form the michalien's. I personally am on my 2nd set in 50k miles, both on the m/s 2. The 1st set was wore out in 20k. They prorated the 2nd set, which i'm getting ready to replace very soon.

Imop these tires have to soft a compound and sidewall for these heavy truck, especilly when loaded or towing heavy. I would recomand a tire with a 3ply sidewall and harder compound.

On a regular car or suv these are great tires maybe on a 1/2 ton truck as well. On a 3/4 ton or heaver i don't thank there worth the money.

For an all around tire I would recommend the Wrangler Silent Armor. My friend won't run anything else on his 00 F250. Says it is the only tire that has lasted for him. I have them on my F150 as well. I had a set of the Michelin M/S. They were the older style but they were completely helpless off road. Great highway tire though very smooth and quiet ride.

F350, every tire maker produces several tires that will fit your truck and do at least OK. You need to let us know more about how you'll use the tires. Dually? The size you listed is a common size for dual rear wheels. Your budget matters. The type of road surface that is the most challenging for traction matters. Your favorite local tire retailer's brands matters. A highway tread pattern will serve one better than an all terrain tread pattern if you never need the traction of that more open pattern on a poor surface. We need more info from you.

You really want to go all out? How about steel corded Michelin XPS Rib fronts and XPS Traction rears? But, probably overkill. (Side note--the XPS Rib make a superb 16" trailer tire.)


Will we ever get away from calling them 10-ply or however many plies? When was the last time a tire really did have ten plies of tire cord...the '50's?

I had the Toyo AT on my RAM 2500 and got approx. 50k out of them. Currently I have the Toyo Open Country H/T with Tuff Duty and have been an excellent tire so far. They are the load range E 285-75-16 and mounted on a set of Alcoa rims with a set of Balance Master's.
