Suggestions for Ford Modular V8 filters

I may give the Ford Racing filter a try...although it is spendy.

I wonder why the car rattles on anything but an MC filter. The only major difference between the 820 and the wix/fram is the bypass location - which shouldn't contribute to a startup rattle, and I highly doubt that both the wix and fram have leaking ADBVs.

That is strange. I will say I just went from a Puro Pure 1 in my hemi jeep to the XG2 Fram, and everything runs the exact same. I've read that that motor is kind of sensitive to startup tick depending on filter, but no issues with the fram ultra that i've see on it.

I wish I could comment on any other filters with my Mustang, but yea I've only used the FL820s. In the past I would usually change it by time not mileage, so I never spent any more on a filter. This last change I knew I was going to drive the car quite a bit, and be pushing it, so I spent the extra $$ on the ford racing filter. It is a good bit more than some of the others, I think amazon has it for $20 with free shipping. But I can say with certainty the engine runs great with it. And its supposed to not only flow better, but also have higher capacity to be a longer life filter so the price may not actually be that bad. The can itself is also quite stout as in heavy. I'll post some pics when I get home of 4 filters (fram, MC, ford racing, and mobil 1). No that the pics tell you much, but from an outside visual inspection, the ford racing filter is made pretty well. I'm really going to have to cut this one open when I'm done with it.

BTW, I have a 4.6 3v also.

Thanks for the info. It's surprising that the Ford Racing filter actually filters and flows better and the FL820. Usually the 'racing' filters that I've seen are all about flow and are more strainers than filters.

My car sees a fair bit of track (roadcourse) time in the summer, so maybe that Ford Racing filter's worth a shot.

No startup rattle on your 4.6 3v?

Other than the walls shaking from the FR500s mufflers? nope haha. I was surprised about the racing filter not only flowing more, but filtering better also. I think in this case the product falls under "ford racing" but really its just more of a premium product from them.
There is a chart somewhere out there showing it flowing more, and being more efficient while doing it. I'd say if you want a good filter, and push your car at the track it may be perfect.

Isn't the FL500S and FL820S interchangeable? The FL500S is the newer design, and not sure what exactly changed compared to the FL820S.

Supposedly they are, although the bypass PSI is much lower on the 500. Only issue I can see is that the 500 is longer than the 820, and it may contact the sway bar on my application, not 100% sure though.

On the bright side, the 500's that I've seen cut open look great, unlike the 820's.

I have an MC FL500 sitting on the shelf right now, so I guess I'll throw that on and see what happens.

Anyone want a 'lightly used' Fram XG2?

This rattle doesn't occur with an FL-820S BTW, but I don't really want to continue using MC filters after seeing the last one that I cut open. Note that I have been using Castrol Edge 5W30 with all of the above noted filters, and yet when I use the MC filters, it's the only time that I don't have the startup rattle. Sigh. Anyone else have this experience? It's a 4.6 3V BTW.
I never used a WIX on my 2010 FX4 with a 5.4L only MC FL-820s and FRAM XG2 filters. I never had a rattle with either, but extending past 10K prompted me to switch to the XG2 and now with the MCs having had or still having problems, I no longer use them at all. I use WIX/Baldwin on my Powerstoke and FRAM Ultra on my Explorer.
