Hi everyone, I've currently got a 'fleet' of three Fords.

One's an F-150 with a coyote 5.0; then my Mustang with the 4.6 3V (with VCT) and a Mark VIII with a 4.6 4V.

Both 4.6's use an FL820S and the truck an FL500S. I have cut open the MC filters in the past and haven't found an issue, but with all the stuff I've read here and elsewhere about the tearolator filters, my confidence in MC is rattled.

I ran Wix 51372 on both 4.6's and both returned excellent used oil analysis, however the Mustang exhibited a very very mild startup rattle for about 1 second, which disappeared when I switched back to MC (same oil, same weight in both OCI's).

The Mark has no issue with the Wix, and if anything had less of a startup rattle with it than the MC. (The 4v 4.6's from that vintage almost universally have timing chain rattle on startup from leaky tensioners - an annoyance more than anything).

So currently all three vehicles have MC filters on them and I'd like to switch. I run a long OCI on the truck and the Mark (follow the OLM)and I don't want to find out after an OCI that my filter wasn't actually filtering much at all. Not good.

I'm seriously considering a Fram Ultra for all three of them, but with the truck under warranty still I'm a little hesitant.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these three engines and the three aforementioned filter brands?

p.s. The Mark is only 5000km's into an OCI and the oil looks a lot darker than normal. The only thing different is the MC filter instead of Wix. Did anyone get any warning signs when a filter element tore?

Sorry for the uber long post!

The most important filter is the air filter and the intake plumbing

This.

I would choose oil filter based on OCI.

If you don't want to use MC, then IMO the following provide high quality AND good prices.

5K: CQ Red
10K: Fram Tough guard
15K+: Fram Ultra

When I had my Mark VIII's, I was using PureOne exclusively, so I have no data for you there.

I use Fram XG2 on my Ford 5.4, and every UOA is fantastic at 10K OCI/20K FCI.

I still use MC filters on my Fords for the most part. Last OCI the truck got a Napa Gold along with Mobil 1 5w20, though.

I use a Fram Ultra on my dad's 2011 F150 with the 5.0. It does not have any issues with startup rattle. I use the filter for the full 15k miles which is 2 OCIs.

Hmm... I wonder if I'd encounter any warranty issues using a non MC filter. (still under the 5yr/100km powertrain)

Not if it's a filter that is specified by the filter seller. Ask your dealer to make sure, as I've heard a lot of bad stories about some Ford dealers making up every crazy excuse to deny warranty.

Cool, another Mark VIII'er.

Did yours have the awesome clatter on startup too?

Love that car, I wish they'd make a Mark IX, but Lincoln's lost its way and hasn't had a clear direction in decades...Cadillac on the other hand...

So basically as long as the filter mfr. says it meets and exceeds OE specs, Ford can't say much (although I'm sure they'd try)? Love my Fords, but Ford Corporate's customer service is poop. Fortunately I have a great relationship with my dealer.

If it's what Fram specs for the engine then it's fine.

BUT I wouldn't run 2 OCIs on them until your warranty is over. That way you'll have a purchase receipt per OCI.

I switched to FRAM Ultra filters (XG2) on my 2010 FX4 when I started extending the OCI. No startup rattle or any other problems were noted and I ran most of them 15K and beyond. I was a little nervous about using MC past 10K (though I did for 15K once) and though it turned out just fine, I would not do it again. I prefer the security of wire backed media. If you do not like MCs and do not want to run FRAM Ultras, then I would use WIX.

No worries there. I don't even let the OLM go below 20%. The truck only accumulates about 12000km's (7500miles ish) per year, so I just change it once yearly.

Use tram tough guard, unless you atlre lucky enough to be able to grab an e core from acdelco? Make sure bypass is at the entrance ,

If the 5.0 is under warranty I'd use a FL500s(I haven't seen anyone post a tear on that filter and I've also cut open 4-5 with 9K+ miles OCI and they've looked great) or equivalent size in the line of your choice on all the engines.

I ran the PPure 1, Fram XG, and M/C FL820S on my 4.6L Lincoln for 4K OCI's with no issues of any kind. These last 2 OCI's are on the Fram Ultra and I'll be sticking with that. No issues on any of them.

IMHO...if the engines are clean and healthy...anything that is plentiful, cheap and has a silicone adbv......I have a small fleet of hi mileage mod motors in my business.

I would stay with Motorcraft. If not then go with Wix. I just cut open a Motorcraft filter off my mustang and it looked fine. I put another one on.

I got excited the first 30 million times they claimed they were making a true Mark VIII replacement, but now have given up hope.

Mine had a wee bit of clatter. Not horribly noticeable, but I picked up all of mine with 40-50k miles, and ran them on Redline 5w30 oil. They lived charmed lives other than me beating the urine out of them doing 120mph on the Triboro bridge, or whatever the he** they're calling it these days.

Never had a better car to conquer screwed up Manhattan roads. That air suspension was the bee's teets.

If I were the Sultan of Brunei, I would commission Ford to build me one of those concepts, with a 12-cylinder version of the Coyote V8 engine, or a V12 engine made of two Ecoboosts joined together.
