If you want something for that same price, Amsoil ATF is a great replacement, AND don't let anyone scare you by saying it does not work in the transmission or that it will harm anything. As Pablo has said, and many others, there are plenty of people who love it in their Honda transmissions.

If you want something half the price of the Z-1, Valvoline Maxlife Dexron III/Mercon, Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle, and Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle are recommended to replace Honda Z-1.

You won't be risking anything, no matter what anyone tries to tell you.

the product sheet mentions nothign about replacing Z1...where did you read that?
http://www.valvoline.com/products/Dexron III Mercon.pdf

Valvoline Maxlife ATF states as "Suitable for use in Honda/Acura ATF-Z1 (except in CVTs) applications"

Valvoline Maxlife ATF

yes, THAT does, but not the Dexron III as posted

For Honda trans, I like to do multiple flushes with cheap Dex and then start using the premium fluid for longer intervals. Now, I'm done with repeats and just do yearly 3q drains with M1 ATF and Lubeguard. MaxLife looks like a good option if you don't want to mess with Lubeguard. LG is very economical though. My 1st fill w/ M1 ATF (3q) I skip the LG and next fill add the correct amount for 4.5q. Looking at the Castrol MV ATF, it's tempting.

auto-union, by multiple flushes do you mean multiple drain-refills ? If so then if you use cheap dex, then even after multiple drain-refills when you start using premium fluid, there would still be quite a bit of the old(dex) fluid left in it, right ?

Right. Better than old worn/dirty original Z1, yeah? I'm talking about trans that have never seen service in like 80k. Drain-fill-drain-fill and then one more time before using a premium ATF. Once I get the 1st 3q of good ATF in there, I'll run it at least a few months before changing it again. The short cheap Dex runs can be a day/week/month. Maybe that's a good plan, the 1st one run a day, 2nd a week and then a month on the 3rd fill....then the trans is nice and clean for the 3q of premium ATF for maybe 6 months. I'm silly about it because I'm used to $350 ATF changes in my Audis. Being able to change 1/2 the fluid for under $10 makes me giddy.

we just had the transmission rebuilt at 108k...no services prior to that.
I'll stick with Z1 for the civic....
not sure how/why you are running Dexron.

rsylvstr,
I posted about the Valvoline Maxlife ATF (which has DexronIII/Mercon on the bottle), the link you gave was to the regular Valvoline DexronIII/Mercon. Two different products. Valvoline's website only shows the Maxlife with Stop Leak, but there is another one that does not label the "Stop Leak" on the bottle and it is Honda Z-1 rated too. I've seen it at Wal-Mart and auto parts stores.

If I recall, Honda states in the owner's manual that using Dexron III is fine, but also states that shifting may feel different. This is the reason for Lubegard, as it adds the correct frictional characteristics needed. Or you can use a multi-vehicle ATF, which as unDummy states, are all high friction modified.

I'll take your advice with a grain of salt.

I would just like to know were I can get the Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF?

This would work great for both the Honda and the Hyundai.

I've never seen it anywhere. Heck, I've never seen Castrol ATF anywhere.

Well, I bought the Castrol MV-ATF at our local Walmart. I am in Canada, so I am not sure where you can get it in the US.

Maybe give Castrol a call to find out, or a local Castrol distributor?

You offered an analysis. Someone with a never-serviced trans blowing up at 108k and then recommending a fluid is a statement that should be regarded with suspect.

ahhhhh yes, I'm an idiot....and you know when I became the owner of the car, correct?
didn't think so......

Maybe if you had been more clear in your post, noone would have to guess. Uhhh....Z1 saves the day somehow, in a blown trans and umm, yeah, nothing else will do... even though it was never serviced....by someone, whoever. That's crystal-clear. Where is the cause and effect?

FWIW, I serviced a 01 CL-S recently and used Dexron-IIIH and Lubegard Black. No problems.

Killer, maybe you should slow down and read, not skim, my posts....how did i say Z1 would save a transmission? didn't...

I was saying:
1) transmission never serviced
2) transmission took a dump one day and had it rebuilt at 108k, clutch fell apart
3) going to use ZL1 from now on so that I don't have issues with the sensitive Civic transmission
4) oh wait, you have over 2k posts, you must know what you are talking about.

we just had the transmission rebuilt at 108k...no services prior to that. (meaning what...no service = blown trans? Thank you, Captian Obvious. Nothing to do with this thread)

I'll stick with Z1 for the civic. (no reasoning offered...such as: because it's oem, because it smells good, because it worked so well in the Civic trans that blew? No reason other than a tenuous connection to the previous sentence? No cause and effect.)

not sure how/why you are running Dexron. (as I clearly stated, as a FLUSH for an under-serviced trans, advice that might have helped in the Civic trans that you chose not to service, not even with Dexron.)

I GUESS I can see "some" ambiguity in my posts....

and i did re-read my manual, well, her manual, and it does say you can use DIII for a temp fluid replacement....

thanks....

Sorry there. Not looking to torture the subject, just that many people are on this thread saying that there are alternatives to Z1. If you want to use Z1, no probs...just trying to follow your reasoning.
