With fuel prices rocketing skyward, I purchased an 08 Focus SE 5-speed (wonderful vehicle and excellent MPG 34/42 per on-board computer) but has a noisy little powerplant (Mazda engineered). What do the experts on this forum suggest I use to eliminate the clickety, clickety, metal to metal harshness? It suggests Motorcraft Semi-Syn 5-20 and Motorcraft FL 910 filter which is what I'm using but it's as noisy as if it's running on no lubrication at all! How have folks quieted down this venerable and reliable little engine? Thicker oil? Which one? Other than engine clatter (which can't be good), the Focus is a blast to drive!

Thanks in advance oil guys!

Try Castrol GTX 5W-20 and use the same filter.

GTX 5W-20 has shown to be a good oil, and is a little on the thicker side and does not shear down much so it may help with that issue.

So "some" API SM oils will protect the engine and others won't? And this will be decided by noise?

So are you saying "just your engine" is loud... not all the other 2.0 engines? Whichever way you answer my question - you either need to get used to that "natural" loud engine -- or get it fixed by the dealer A.S.A.P.

No motor oil in 5W-20/30 will make a significant sound difference. All you can expect is a very minor sound improvement from a few other name brands.

I have an 05 and it's noisy and fun to drive like you say. Noise comes from injectors, and from the air intake. And road noise from rough highway surfaces drounds out engine noise in mine. You'll get used to the engine, but I don't think you'll get used to the road noise.

Have you tried using the radio yet? That is how I control all the ancillary noised you get from the driving experience.

The Motorcraft syn blend is a good oil to use according to uoa's on here.

pennzoil yellow bottle, gtx, havoline all good oils for 5K intervals if that is what you will be doing

That 2.0 has no VVT and is nowhere near the same engine as the one the mazdas run outside of the block, but I digress. It is a mazda based design.

Run any 5w20 for the factory spec'd intervals. Don't run a fram filter.

Now you know the secrets to all that are oil related. Your car will now last 400,000+ miles.

Our Duratecs likes PP.. but their was very little difference between PP and Havoline. I think they prefer the thin oil. If the 2.0 is like the 2.3 nothing will stop the injector noise.. cleaners just make it louder.

I can't tell you how many people think injector noise is pinging, knocking, valve tick etc.... it's unbelievable
