Substitute straight hose for curved bypass hose?

I’m resealing the water inlet plate as The Critic described on a Toyota Sienna. Turns out a goober move I made by using silicone spray to help a hose install easier ruined a bypass hose between the water inlet plate and the throttle body. The new hose is $10 from Toyota but I’m afraid the dealer might not have one in stock and I’ll have to use straight hose as a plan B.

there’s the hose in question. It has a 90 degree bend on one end, and a 45 degree bend on the other end but perpendicular. The Gates catalog is saying a foot of bulk 5/16” heater hose can be used but my worry is that the straight hose might not be able to conform to contours. I might try it out if I can’t get a hose at the dealer later on today.

If the Gates catalog specifically says a straight piece of hose can be used instead then it probably works OK. Being a foot long helps, but it might touch something along it's route vs the formed hose. But that may not matter. All you can do is look at it to visualize how it would route, or actually try it.

I wouldn't believe that a straight hose is going to bend at a 90 degree without kinking in some way. A 45 is no problem. When I had that problem, I bought a longer heater hose with a 90 already on it and then cut it to length.

Get the formed hose, it will last longer. I substituted a straight hose for the formed by pass on a Jeep 360. 2 yrs later,A pin hole split spraying on the fan belts resulted in a tow call when the battery ran down.

Do they even make 5/16" heater hose? I mean, yeah, gates thinks so, but I haven't seen it in the FLAPS.

Some SAE 30R9 fuel injection hose will be really stiff with plenty of cords so shouldn't fold in on itself. 30R7 should work too and be cheaper.

It doesn't help you today but since I got into a problem with a 6" double curved coolant VW hose I couldn't get and VW wanted $78 for it with non available for a week I started keeping this stuff on hand. I bends easily (even 90 degrees) without kinking and is better than EPDM hose, so good in fact Dayco offers it as their premium hose. Make sure you use silicone hose compatible clamps (Amazon has them).

I am with you, hoses can NOT bend like that!!

I got the OEM piece on order. Went to the local non-chain parts house, I got a piece of 5/16” gates heater hose so the van can be operated while the part is ordered. I need to do a D&F of the coolant once again(switching from Toyota pink to Prestone Cor-Guard) so this will do.
