for it's 2011 Forester. It has the new 2.5l engine. It went back to Tokyo Roki to use thier filters instead of Honeywell.

I have often commented on the previous oil filter being to small in size in my opinion. Subaru has also reestablished their relation ship with Tokyo Roki who makes a much superior oil filter in my opinion than Honey well. Tokyo Roki still makes the oil filter for the H6 (3.0l & 3.6l) and used to make the 15208 AA100 for the H4 until it was superceeded to the 15208AA12A.

Its Important to note as well that Subaru Requires Synthetic Oil for the 2011 Subaru Forester.

The move to a bigger oil filter is a much needed one in my opinion, I don’t as of yet believe it is backwards compatible to fit the older H4 engines but will post an update when I
know more

I feel that the older filter was a good size for the H4 engine bcause many engines ran past 250,000 miles using that size filter. I wonder if the new filter size was changed to reflect a longer oil change interval or if it is a way to get increased oil capacity without resorting to a sump change?

There's been some posts about this new subaru filter already, and regarding the 2011 Forester engine, the FB25, requiring synthetic now. It is interesting for sure.

But this pic of the new and old filter side by side is new. I didn't realize the new filter was that much larger. They probably made a new space for it in the new FB. No way that would fit on my EJ25.

If you want a bigger (longer) filter for an EJ23 use the WIX 51356 (not --65). It clears the exhaust NP. I continue to use the Honeywell since - 1) car is under warranty and, 2) The P- ring base gasket doesnt leak/weep (like most of the other aftermarket units i've tried). I'm not convinced that the high bypass (21-23psid) is beneficial on the non-turbo engines and Fuji is calling this info "proprietary".

So the imported Toyo Roki fileter from Japan or made by their US subsidiary Filtech? Interesting they didn't choose Toyota's Denso as their supplier, given their relationship now with Toyota.

Wow... didn't realize it was 10k. Severe 5k I assume then?

Must be fine to run the interval much longer than the 2008 Canadian mandated 6k km (3750 mile) OCI on my Forester, assuming I run synthetic.

I would not assume that in comparison to a 5w-20, which should be more long-lived than a 5w-30, the VI of which typ come from VII improvers not base stocks.

Synthetic is required for all 2011 Subaru's and the OCI for both n/a and turbo is 7,500 miles. The new filter is for the new n/a FB engine only, which has a larger sump capacity (close to 6 qts. IIRC). I haven't seen any data that the smaller filters, or even that the Honeywells, are a problem. And I'm not talking about the 1900 pics of cut open oil filters around the Internet.

I posted a document from Subaru somewhere on here with the new OCI. It might be in one of the links Bill posted, I didn't check.

Also, Subaru has not re-established their relationship with Tokyo Roki. It was SoA that brought in the Honeywell because the cars from the factory have still been arriving with the Roki's installed. Or rather, the WRX's and Forester's from Japan have been. Not 100% sure about the Legacy's and Outback's from Indiana.

From the November 2010 issue of Subaru's TechTips:

P.S. - According to SoA, the Subaru branded Idemitsu oil is SM/GF-4.

Some people are asking who makes Subaru branded oil...here is your answer :

"In 2010, Subaru of America partnered with Idemitsu Lubricants America Corporation in Jeffersonville, IN to prepare Subaru-branded synthetic motor oil for applications in the new FB four-cylinder engine and in turbocharged engines. Researching and formulating Subaru engine-specific 0W-20 and 5W-30 synthetic motor oil ensures quality, performance, and ultimately, customer satisfaction."
