From various sources in Subaru Of America parts, and message boards--

1. Old "black" filters are fantastic, very durable and very high-quality.

2. New blue filters are made by Honeywell Canada, and the innards are identical to orange-can Frams.

3. Dealers are pulling the old "black" filters off of the shelves for some reason, and replacing only with Blues...so no more blacks for sale.

Taken from another poster--

"Hey guys, we just found out last week that Subaru found a domestic supplier for their oil filters so they were no longer importing the Japanese Tokyo Roki filters. Instead they are being made by Honeywell in Canada and it looks like Honeywell makes Fram Filters.

I cut open a Tokyo Roki filter and a new filter and didn't like what I saw. The new Honeywell filter has a plastic pressure relief valve where the Tokyo Roki filter had a metal one. The filtration unit frame is made of a cardboard material rather than the metal frame in the Tokyo Roki. And the filtration element looks like it has 3/4 the amount of surface area.

So if you do use the OEM Subaru filters, go to your dealer today and buy as many up as possible. I did.

The part number for the Tokyo Roki filter is 15208AA100
The part number for the Honeywell filter is 15208AA12A"

Edit: I can't take credit for the pic, but it is hilarious!

ahhhh, its about time the foreign manufacturers caught up to the way that Americans buy.

Subaru CEO to his engineers "We save 49 cents per filter, that adds up to almost $50,000 per year"

All 79 Engineers back to CEO "But you will have 10 times the failure rate resulting in over $200,000 in warranty claims"

CEO "exactly that's why were going with the FRAMS, man I love these 79-1 tie breaker votes, buy more Subaru stock in your 401k's guys"

Engineers under their breath ....time to get the resume together.

I cut apart the last Tokyo Roki that was on my moms car and those are really tough filters. The media is so well attached to the core that I just gave up trying to get it off in one piece.

If I didn't have another Bosch 3312 on hand, I might consider going to Subaru to see if they had any TR's left for me to purchase.

Hmm... does Wix make a filter for Subaru? I had been planning on using Subaru OE filters bought @ dealer for my oil changes, now: not so much... (unless they still have the black ones left)

Actually there are two separate companies, Toyo Roki and Tokyo Roki... as confusing as that is.

I know, I used to think it was a typo too, but it actually says Tokyo Roki on the OEM Subaru filters whereas it says Toyo Roki on some of the Japanese Honda filters.

Doesn't the Subaru take the same filter that Honda autos do??

That part # crosses to a WIX 51365. Hey, that's the same filter that fits my brother's Honda motorcycle and my John-Deere and Kubota tractors, too.

A "universal" filter..

Look at the very bottom of the CALSCI Filter Cross Reference Page - looks like that filter is part of group [5]. Wow, that's a pile of filters. Will all those work? Man, that's quite a variety of choices, if they will.

reasons for the change is most likely cost related canada is a lot closer then japan hehe - another reason could be the japan units were malfunctioning...

Not likely.

About 2 or 3 years ago, Subaru dropped the black Japanese filter in favor of a USA sourced (Purolator??) white filter. Sure enough, there were numerous warranty claims because of oil leaks at the filter. Subaru recalled the white filters, and returned to the Japanese filter. Now history is repeating itself.

I'd say that it's "managed" trade. Canada called up and said that they needed to employ some people. US official looked around and found someone who could use a Canadian product here. Happens all the time

i use the bosch 3323, it's a great filter, bigger than oem, and i just bought a case of 12 for about 50 bucks. its still far enough away from the exhaust that i'm not worried about cooking the oil, but possibly with the turbo and higher temp i would just use the little baby sized filter. bosch has very high surface area, very solid build, and superior filter medium. otherwise, i've also got a case of pure one, in the same corresponding over size.

Funny thing is, I just cut open a white Subaru filter

(from my H6 - see here
https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/subaru-oil-filter-cardboard-endcaps.96451/
will be posting pics later today - likely a FRAM, cardboard endcaps, plastic bypass valve UGH)

and the filter is stamped 'Made in USA'.

How stupid is Subaru Canada for buying a filter made in the USA and Subaru America for buying a filter made in Canada?!?!
