Stupid, shady HVAC services

So my AC fan would not run yesterday. Let me give you a little back story. The complete unit is not that old and was replaced with a new furnace, inside coil and outside compressor. Basically a complete new system. And THIS was because the last one put in all new by the previous service didn't cool properly. Plus in the winter the new furnace kept going out.

This last new unit has worked OK except the filter basket set up is not right and it's hard to get a filter in and it falls into the blower making it shut off.

So the fan is not coming on probably because the filter kept hitting the fan. The house quickly gets into the 90's! I called the place yeasterday that put in this unit to have them fix it. The unit is not under warranty. The guy just puts another bracket in to hold the filter. So the filter still has to be smashed to put it in and is barely held away from the fan. But he calls it all good. The fan doesn't run, so he proclaims the fan is bad and needs replaced, but won't have one till tomorrow. I suggest that maybe it is a relay or something but he insists the fan is shot, more on this later.

OK here's where it gets better. He disconnects a wire to the compressor because, "if the compressor runs without the fan it will damage the coil". I don't believe that but I don't want someone unhooking something and leaving it when all that needed to done at most is not turn the AC on.

The house is too hot so I take a look at it. I find the fan will run if connected to constant power. So I hook it up and run it to cool the house down.

Here is the best part. Today I unhook the unit expecting them to come. After sitting around waiting all day for them to call, I call to see if they have the fan in. They tell me, "Yeah but they probably can't get to it today because they called several times and no one answered." In reality the phone has not rung, no calls from them on my caller ID and no messages on my answering machine. What is the sense in them making up a bold-face lie like that when a person would easily know it?

Well the only good part is I hooked the unit back up to where the fan runs constantly and slowly the house will cool down from 90. I'm not sure why it takes so long to cool.

Sounds like maybe the wiring in the thermostat?

I've concluded that you can't put up with bull [censored] like that from businesses, especially outright provable lies. I'd be in their office tomorrow and call them on it. Ask to speak with a higher up.

Obviously but I don't really have a say since I don't actually own the property but a relative and don't get to pick who does the service. It doesn't change the fact that both of the companies are shady and incompetent. It's like you can't get anything done right no matter what you pay. These construction type services are worse than most bad auto mechanics. Especially when you consider they are just specializing on one thing.

I really don't think it is the thermostat. It is pretty new and cycles the AC unit but it could be a possibility. The thing is the fan did ocassionally act up today at first even connected to constant power connection on the control board. This connection isn't necessarily direct power so it still might not be the fan but a relay or something like I suspect.

But obviously the guy didn't check it out properly since the fan is running perfectly fine to constant power. He didn't fix the filter assembly right either. It's like all they want to do is come out and jerry rig things and take the easy money.

That really burns me up for that guy to tell me they can't work on it today because they called and no one answered.

I cant tell you how many times over the years I have heard stories like this, esp in this day and age where every customer is so darn valuable!

Are you comfortable changing the control board yourself?

Its possible I could find a local supplier for you if you like.

Yeah and the service is about to get worse because this new "ME" generation just doesn't get it.

Good luck to us all.

Thanks. I would not be comfortable changing the board with all its wiring. I'm not too knowledgable about residential systems and wiring. Even electrical systems on cars are my weak point although I do work on them lol. Besides, I'd rather the owner pay for it and I'm not 100% sure it is the board and not some other system in the fan circuit. I wished I did know no more about residential and could do the job right myself.

what I do when i change circuit boards is pop off the old board with all the wires still connected, then I attach the new board to the old boards location. I take off once wire at a time and attach it to its new location. Then I will check that against the furnaces wiring diagram.

And you know what? I have no problem doing this but get me near a piece of wood, and I can mess that up Noooooooo problem lol.

Good for you though getting the fan to run and getting the a/c to work!

That sounds like the best way to do it. I guess if I had the exact same replacement board it'd be pretty straightforward. The schematic is kind of confusing, but all schematics seem to be. The problem with residential electric systems, I'm always worried about the high voltage and potential shocks. I guess there are safeguards to take.

I too have a shady HVAC service story. Someone tried to sell my dad a new furnace at his rental because "the heat exchanger was cracked". My dad called me in, I brought a high-powered light from work and gave the heat exchanger a thorough inspection - there were no cracks.

A different HVAC tech came out from the service and he seemed to know what he was doing more. Turns out it was not the fan but the control board relays like I suspected and the board has to replaced. He also said he would see what they could do about installing a good filter rack when they get the board next week. I gues it all depends on the particular tech you have come out whether you get decent service. I still don't think too much of this service co.

What irritates me is that the service industry (and I'm in it!) has become all about false sales - it's like buying a car. The pilot safety valve went out on my furnace 2 years ago and I called the company my family has used forever - 2 young techs show up, one in training. They fiddle around with the furnace for a while and diagnose the problem. Then the grocery list comes - we'd like to clean it, lube it, customize this and that, put a new filter in (when the one in there was brand new and I had THE SAME company out previously to do full maintenance on it). I told the guys that if they're gonna give customers the sales pitch they might want to look at their own records first so they don't get caught being bold faced liars. They then gave me the B S that all that stuff should be done every year and yadda yadda yadda.

Yeah and worst of all if you don't watch them or have some knowledge of the equipment they might not even perform the service or do it right.

I hate the modern furnaces. you can't even relight the pilot light and freeze to death till the HVAC guy comes out lol. Then a whole electronic board has to be replaced.

This complicated technology - though it saves energy for the customer - seems that all the money saved by the consumer eventually goes to the repairman, as well as the initial cost premium.

I like my old inefficient furnace. I've been able to repair it four times myself, at little cost.

I live in a relatively new community, it started about 11 years ago. 800+ households are in our community Yahoo group. It's been invaluable separating the con-men from the competent. If we need a repairman, we search the database and see who's been naughty and who's been nice.

There has been surprisingly little disagreement on who's good and who's bad, other than a few old curmudgeons that live to complain.

That's a pretty good idea there. I wonder what it would take to set up something like that in my neighborhood. It's a very old neighborhood with no associations. Might bring the idea up with some folks to see if there's any interest.
