everything is ok in moderation, yes, narcotic included. Whey else would they prescribe morphine for some patients?

The problem is, it is hard to do everything in moderation.

Morphine is not a good analogy. It is a potent pain killer and the amount administered depends on the amount of pain taking into consideration the condition of the patient because it slows down the respiratory system. It can result in death if the dosage is high and the patient is old and frail (probably not a bad way to go, actually).

I am not quite sure about the drinking part. Regularly you see studies that confirm or reject this idea. One thing is certain though - heavy drinking is likely to cause health issues and social isolation.

Actually, there have been more studies that corroborate the story I posted, then do not. That is, the majority of alcohol studies show that moderate drinking leads to longer life compared to people who never drink. It may also be that even though they live longer, they suffer from more alcohol related problems such as alcoholics lung or liver disease. But they live longer on average!

It must be true as my Doctor advised me to drink a glass of RED WINE at dinner time, and an ocassional BEER would be beneficial to my health

In Australia maybe, but here in the states there are a very vocal bunch of socially conservative folks that don't like for people to have any fun so every time we get news like this, those of us who are less holy than some like to make a big deal of it.

Alcoholic beverages were the drink of choice for most of recorded history since the water supply only became reliable in the last 100 years.

I'll increase my 1 6 shot jim and coke a night to 3 of them!

Not even enough to get me a buzz!
