String Trimmer - Stihl or Echo??

I just bought the FS90R a few weeks ago and love it. I've never had a string trimmer start right up and where the string comes out when you bump it. well worth every penny.

What are some of the least troublesome brands you've used, in commercial use?

I have a Stihl FS055 or something like that which I purchased new in 1984 for well over $400.00. It's been pretty much bullet proof over the years and for that price, it had better be. These days, I buy nothing but Echo products. Excellent quality for considerably less money. I see that Stihl/Husqvarna etc. have begun to price match Echo products. One has to wonder however, how much quality compromise has occurred for them to suddenly drop their prices? I'm suspecting that the price matched products might be coming out of China.

I already bought my new trimmer but I saw tonight that Home Depot has an Echo brand trimmer on sale.

They also have a Toro on sale too. I would have considered a Toro to be as much of a throw-away as my old Bolens but the ad highlights the fact this model has a full crankshaft. I guess everyone is PO'ed by the cheap half-crank engines.

I have to chime in for the Echo 210 here. I picked up one last year from an independent dealer and it has been great. I paid right around $200 and it came with a five year homeowner warranty. I replaced the bump head with one of the heads you talked about in your post and I love it. You don't have to wind trimmer line just cut two pieces and shove them into the head. Good trimmer line lasts longer than you would think and I waste a lot less line with the new head.

I have a small Stihl trimmer that I bought some 8 or 9 years ago. Been trouble free for the most part considering I don't do much maintenance on it.
As a result of that, I had a new carb put on two years ago. Plus the fuel hose from the tank to the carb deteriorated some years back.

It's fairly easy to rewind line on the head and does a great job trimming around the 2 acres I have.

From what I've gathered the Shindaiwa name maybe the thing of the past. Echo will replace the Shindaiwa name no longer made from Shin.

The Shindaiwa distributor here tried to have Echo buy them out and had ask Echo from a business view point to handle the Echo products. Echo declined. Shindaiwa will no longer be available from what I've gathered end of the road in production. Worldwide eventually I might add. Shindaiwa's name will be wiped out. I guess that's the industry..the monopoly of it!

The distributor has picked up the Maruyama products. Will be looking at the http://www.maruyama-us.com/products/default.aspx?id=210&ekmensel=c580fa7b_16_22_210_7 in the near future. Very positive feedback from the distributor on the Maruyama products.

Echo GT-2103 bought 15+ years ago. I go through 4 liters of fuel every summer. Only use Echo 2 stroke oil. No smoke and dead reliable. I also replaced the stupid bump head with the manual straight string load head, which I bought at Lee Valley. Every Fall I pull and clean the plug, drain and run all the fuel out, and add a little of that Echo oil to keep the cylinder wet over the winter. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Echo trimmer.

we have both a tanaka 21 cc trimmer, and a fs120 stihl. I like the stihl more but its a little heavier and sure has more balls for heavy weed trimming.

I have to agree. Echo is better. Stihls new gas caps SUCK and the synthetic oil mix makes my stuff run [censored].

Echo for hand trimmers hands down. Stihl makes good equipment but they are to dang heavy. We do this every day for a living and we only run Echo trimmers. We have 2 SRM-230's that have been used daily for the last 5 years with out a single problem.
