strange place to leak oil ????

I have an oil leak on my 1996 GMC Jimmy in an unusual place. it is leaking from the oil filter mount, where the oil filter gasket meets the oil filter housing. I have cleaned it off well every time I change the filter. there are no remaining parts of an oil filter gasket anywhere. tried to find the exact part number on Rock auto and can not seem to find it. looks like to change it I would need to loosen two bolts and two oil cooler lines at the top. have tried a few different brands of filters and the leak will slow a little if the gasket is thicker, where it seems to be compressed more. the leak is on the bottom of the filter. thanks for any advice.

There is a gasket involved in placing the oil filter holder at right angles to the block so it does not interefere with the front drive shaft if you have 4WD. The adapter can be disconnected from the block and a new gasket (O-ring??) can be installed. I had to have this done on a Chevy truck.

Thanks for the info. my truck is 4wd. what I can not understand is why the oil is leaking where the metal base connects to the oil filter gasket. to me it seems almost like the mount is out of round like a brake rotor gets and the gasket is not sealing correctly. is it possible that the mount may need to be changed ? I hate to change the o ring you suggested only to have it still leaking. does the o ring position the mount at a specific angle so that the gasket on the oil filter will be touching evenly all the way around ?

I have an adapter like that on my Yukon's 5.7. Most likely, the gasket and O ring are leaking and it looks like it's the filter.
In 220,000 miles, I've replaced that gasket a couple of times. It's not too much trouble. Just make sure everything is clean and dry when you reassemble it and let any sealant you use set up before starting the engine.
