My cell phone rang this morning. The number calling me was

1 111 111 1111

There was an oriental voice, sounded like a recorded message, couldn't make out what was said, but something about a message. Hung up.

Okay, so what kind of call is this? Can that number be for real or is it a disguise of the caller's real number?

It's Asian not "Oriental". Rugs are Oriental, people are Asian. I get those calls once in a while also. Set your phone to block the number.

I don't answer calls with numbers like that. I had one yesterday and all the numbers listed were zeros. I also don't answer when it says the caller is unknown. If your not in my caller ID list you will have to leave me a message.

Can I be in your list Johhny? hahaha Good advice!

I get them once in a while. They are computer generated telemarketing calls with virtual caller ID numbers that get through the system in guise of a legitimate number(s).

If they are ID as such I don't answer them. If they leave a message I'll will catch them in the evening under my free charge calling plan during PM hours.

You sure? I think they are interchangable. Would like to get Mori's take on this.

It's a fake caller ID. Marketing scum does that so you won't know who's calling.

Could also be a VOIP call that lost it's caller ID data when it was handed off between systems, but it's prolly just marketing scum.

I'm pretty sure. :)

Around here we used to have Caller ID, and Caller ID blocking that you have to pay extra for. Then they came out with Blocked Caller ID Unblocking for another extra fee. Caller ID Spoofing makes the whole thing pointless, which is probably a good thing.

The term "Oriental" when referring to people is dated at best. At worst, it's an old, imperialist term with a derogatory connotation. I would avoid using the term at least when talking about people.

I'm not sure if I'd want to be called "an Occidental." I'd feel like I'm getting lumped in with anybody west of Turkey.

PS: It's an oriental rug, not an Oriental rug.

The people who indoctrinated and trained you many years ago, the same people who inserted you as a sleeper agent, have finally contacted you. They want to activate you through a mnemonic cue, which is the senseless babbling you heard. Be very afraid! You should watch some movies in preparation for what's going to happen:

- The Manchurian Candidate
- Little Nikita
- Telefon

Good luck, TallPaul!

This is what really scares me:

If I stare at it long enough will my brain turn it right side up?

+1. It was almost certainly marketing scum, but when I placed outgoing calls from Skype, the called ID on the other end was always mangled up. Skype now offers the ability to *set* the characters you'd like to appear on called ID in your account at their site. That you can now set it is comforting, but that you can set it to anything you want is at the same time mildly troubling.
