Forgot to post this last oil change. I used a AC Delco UPF44 oil filter on my 5.3 chevy. I pre fill the oil filter before I install it. I usually don't spill any oil and get it all in the filter but this time oil got into the metal plate and filled the area right under the black gasket. Then air bubles started to come up through where the metal plate meets the rubber gasket as if the metal seem has a leak and oil was getting into that part. I hopr I explained that clear engough. I don't know if that is good/bad or normal.

So far oil pressure seems normal but ever sence I started using German Catrol and UPF 44 my enfine knocks a lot on hot start ups. It never did this on Mobil 1 and Napa Gold oil filters. I did Use Mobil 1 and a UPF44 once befor using GC and the engine was quiet. I think the engine noise is caused bu the GC over the oil filter???

Kinda sounds like the antidrainback isn't antidrainbackin' very well on this individual filter. If the noise is bad enough try just changing the filter to see if noise goes away...(and see if filter is empty when you take it off (let it sit a while before you take the filter off to see if it is draining out...))

The filter sits vertical so it will be full. It is a 5.3 Chevy motor. It leaks on the metal plate that has the main inlet hole and the smaller (5 I think) holes around the big hole. This metal plast has a seem on it and that is where it leaks.

Maybe just try swapping the filter (only the filter) out anyway, it's the only way to see if that particular filter is the culprit. You can keep the filter and use it next time. A malfunctioning ADB valve can allow oil above the filter to drain back too, not just the oil literally inside the filter. Good luck with the investigation.

Hope it is only a bad filter and not "CSK" cold start knock. If your not familiar with this Chevy defect go to WWW.Pistonslap.Com , a website dedicated to CSK. The piston skirt will rattle for a few seconds until it heats up and expands to the correct diameter because the top piston ring groove was machined to close to the top of the piston. This is what I have read anyways, sounds like Chevy is replacing the pistons on the really loud engines if there lucky.

I just pulled the UPF44 off of my Vette and installed a Baldwin B-31. I do notice better oil pressure. Try changing the filter first.

The GC is a 12 Cst oil compared to a 10 Cst oil for Mobil-1 at 100 degrees C. Could be the source, but I would suspect the oil filter first and it is easy enough to swap out.

Vettenuts, How well does the Bladwin B-31 flow, how much is it and where can I get 1? Thank you.

I started using upf-44 in my silverado 6.0 about
6 months ago. So far I have gone thru 2 filters and have not noticed any increase in start up noise or decrease in oil pressure. Infact, My cold start ups (north dakota winter) have been much better with the upf-44 over the wix that I had on previous. I am using M1 5w-30

In response to your original question-I don't think it had anything to do with the way you filled the filter before you installed it. I do know- from experience- you should never overfill the new oil filter before installing it. You should only fill about 1/2 to 2/3 full.
I like and use AC Delco oil filters and don't have any problems with them. This list generally rates them highly.
