Strange "blend" question

Hi All,

I have been combining my leftover oils into one container and wanted to get some advice. Could I use the blended oil in an older car without any problems? My wife's aunt and uncle are visiting this weekend and thought I could do a free oil change for him and get rid of my extra stock but want to make sure it is safe. He has an early 90's Toyota Corolla and if I can get more details I will let you know but here is the blend for you to decide:

Motorcraft 5w20
Valvoline 10w30
Supertech Syn 5w30
Delo 400 15w40
Shell Rotella 15w40
There might be one more but not sure.

All of this is combined in a leftover 5qt jug.

Personally, from the "brew" results I've seen here over time (and see the concurrent thread), I wouldn't have a problem doing this to one of my vehicles, at not if done on an infrequent basis. Of course, there are several potential problems lurking nearby. While I can't say I've seen evidence here of a brew hurting an engine, I can't say that any particular brew wouldn't be a problem. There's also the quasi-ethical question of whether it's right to experiment with someone else's engine unless they're fully aware of what you're contemplating, and they approve of it.

That is a valid point and I can try and convey that to her uncle but he is definitely ot the type to work on their vehicle and probably take it in to Jiffy Lube for service. They may even have done it prior to their trip here but I at least wanted to ge tsome feedback before attempting anything. Thanks for the reply.

That seems like an excellent blend. You have Group II/ II+, Group III’s, and Chevrons Isosyn Group II’s in there.

With mixing oils, I look at the glass as being half full rather than half empty.

The way I figure it, if one of the oils has a better anti-oxidant, you’ll get some overall benefit from that, if one oil has a better base oil, you’ll get some overall benefit from that, if one has better solvency, you’ll get some overall benefit from that, and so on and so forth …

My current fill is …

Castrol Syntec 5w-50 SH
Motomaster Formula 1 5w30 SM (Shell)
Motomaster Formula 1 synthetic blend 5w30 SJ (Esso)
Presidents Choice (Esso) 5w30 SM

Makeup oil will a MM synthetic blend 5w30 SJ (Shell branded GII/III).

If I was visiting, you could drop that mix in my crankcase no problem.

hehe, thanks for the post, Drivebelt! They ended up bringing their Ford Explorer so I am not sure what is going to happen at this point but I am glad to get good feedback about the mixture. I like yours as well and I think blends can be very good overall.

At the office I mixed up three coffee's for a pot of coffee...tasted like donky poop....if your car could speak I wonder what it would say?

My uncle worked for Mobil Oil in Texas for several years before the merger and was a liason to the Nigerian division. He gave up a six figure a year job to "move in a new direction" and is still unemployed.

I wish I could have had his job.
