STP Premium air filters… decent?

Before too long I’ll need to replace the air filter in the Carnival. It uses a unique locking system to seal the filter. Some aftermarket filters bypass this by using ‘fingers’ to provide sealing pressure. I don’t like that idea as much. Of those which use the OEM style, there is… OEM (no efficiency data or any other specs listed), Wix, and STP/ STP Premium filters. The STP Premium caught my attention, since it’s the only higher-tiered filter I can easily find for this vehicle. They list 99% filtering but not a micron rating.

Wasn't even aware that STP had a "premium" filter these days, an AutoZone thingy, but from their website they appear comparable in build, quality and intent to other mainstream brands such as Fram, Purolator, Wix, etc. Trippy red media paper, a cool marketing trick, although it'd be easier to judge dirt load on a white media. I do recall seeing the standard (non-premium) STP air filters at AutoZone years ago, and how lightweight, flimsy and unimpressive they were. You could literally hold an STP and Fram in your two hands and feel a weight difference. STP claims their premium air filters have a dirt capacity of twice their standard filters, which doesn't reflect well on the latter. So I'd avoid standard STP oil/air filters, but their premiums seem fine. I too would likely stick to brands that mirror the OEM design (you mentioned "fingers"), not that the others won't necessarily work well. The Wix would of course work fine too. If one is substantially cheapest between the OEM, Wix and STP, that's your clear choice. People seem confused as to STP origin, with suspected manufacturers including AAF International, Champion Labs, Premium Guard, and First Brands, although I believe they're likely another surprise venture by my neighbor's wicked-smart German Shepherd, made in his expansive doghouse. His raccoon workforce provides the needed opposable thumbs.

I have used the regular STP filters many times without issues, but never tried the premium model because I believe they are oiled. I don’t prefer/use oiled air filters.
For my specific vehicles STP Premium are not oiled and not reusable, they are just a better built standard replacement air filter with 98% efficiency.

Probably a good idea to double check just to make sure. Unless you don’t care either way of course.

From the AutoZone website: "STP Premium Air Filters feature a media that is less restrictive than standard air filters and less restriction supports optimized engine performance. To maintain high airflow without compromising efficiency, our premium air filter media is treated with a light coating of oil that traps up to 2X the dirt and dust when compared to a standard air filter. This unique combination makes STP Premium Air Filters an excellent choice for optimized engine performance without sacrificing protection."

Someone in the oil filter forum just posted "STP now confirmed as Champion made."

Interesting, the last time I seen the box of them it didn't mention any oiling, maybe there was a change since then or I overlooked it. I currently have FRAM Ultra Air and Supertech on my vehicles though, put them on about 6 months ago.

My next air filter in the Toyota will be the MircoGard Select. I’ve used the NAPA Gold and STP Standard without issue. But figured why not give the MG Select a try.

Does the STP website or product packaging mention anything about reusable or the need to oil? I didn't see either during a brief look-see.

Is there an issue with a factory "lightly oiled" filter such as STP Premium, such as seepage onto the airbox surfaces? I would think the light oil would be a feature rather than a bug, so long as it doesn't migrate and attract dirt.

I ran the regular Microgard air filter at one point in both my Toyota and Chevy, I was not impressed by how little protection it offered but they held up, the Select for my truck says made in China which I am not against but I don't think it is going to be anything special over the Supertech I currently have in my Chevy which is made in USA for around $12 that they claim is good for 3yr/30,000 although I personally change yearly.

Not sure where the FRAM Ultra Air I use in my Toyota is made though but $13 at Walmart it works good.

I don’t anticipate it to to be any better or worse than other offers. I have an O’Reillys rebate gift card coming my way so out the door price will be around 10 bucks.
