The oil filter is very close to exhaust manifold, so if the engine is hot (as it should be,) you must very careful not to burn yourself. I use a filter wrench with a flat round metal strap, which helps with this a lot. I can't imagine changing this filter from above without this wrench. Unless the engine is cold.

Otherwise, make sure you've got a 25mm/1" socket for the drain plug. A fresh drain plug washer is nice but not a must.

As far as oil filters, the best generic filter by far for this engine is MANN W-917, under $4 mail order. The next best is AC Delco PF-13, either US-made or UK-made. These are all of superior quality, on par with OEM Volvo filter, which is MANN W-917 painted in Volvo colors.

Best oil for the B230 is something 15w40, unless temps go below 10'F. Then use 10w30.

These cars are extremely easy to maintain and repair. Mostly due to their extreme simplicity.

I just changed the oil in my bother in laws recently acquired 1991 740 wagon with 179,000k.
It is the 16v version. I used the UK made AC-13
and 15W40 pep boys oil.( A chemist had told me that Pep boys has a very good additive package in their own brand oil.) What grade do you recommend in NY winters for this car.

I am going to change oil on this late 80's Volvo station wagon. Probably '87 or '88. It is a 700 series. I am not sure about the engine. Probably 4 cylinder. I got an STP filter from Autozone. The choices inluded Bosch, Mobil and FRAM. The engine is really high-mileage, so I don't care for premium stuff. Just something that works.

How hard is it to reach the oil filter? Any surprises I should be aware of? I change oil my other vehicles (Ford truck, Subaru, and GM) but never on a Volvo before.

i've had several volvos, 200 and 700 series both are pretty much the same as far a the drivetrain is concerned. the oil filter and oil are important, especially in a high mileage engine. the volvo motors are known for lasting a long time. out of the three volvos i've had, the mileage on two of the 4 cylinder models when i got rid of them were 175,000 and 365,000. the 6 cylinder model i have right now is at 230,000. i put crappy oil and oil filters on the engine with 175,000 miles on it and spun a rod bearing. the V6 i have doesn't like to run on anything except 15w40. do yourself a favor, use a decent oil and buy either a bosch or mann oil filter (available from the dealer or online)you really aren't saving any money when you're compromising the protection of your engine. the car will last a long time if you take care of it. oh, and NEVER use a fram filter. maintenance is easy on this car.
