I have not seen lines like this at the VERY few gas stations open (due to their OWN power source) since the early '70s A-rab oil embargo(s).

One I clocked at OVER 2 MILES LONG!!!!!!

(With cops posted at the station, and patrolling the lines.)

I don't know if someone already posted this or not, but there is a vid online somewhere with a shark swimming in the city streets in a shore town.

Also, our very own governator said in his press speech that he has actually seen a whole house off of it's foundation, smack dab in the middle of RT. 35. OUCH!!

I was watching nbc news and lots of staten island new yorkers complaining about they aren't getting help. gas lines are long, they have no power, and american red cross didn't arrive yet with any food! they are claiming the rich people in NY are getting services first and the poor don't get anything. lots of them crying on tv. reminded me of hurricane katrina with the poor left behind

The Jones Act and New York tax/registration requirements for tankers have been waved to help get bureaucracy out of the way to aid in getting people fuel.

Why don't they do this everyday?

I think the Hess at exit 63 on LIE has gas, the gulf at the next exit doesn't. Another small station I just talked to was expecting gas on Saturday, but now it is Monday or later.

200Million gallons of gas are moving from an unload upstate.

Coming north on 295 today in NJ, I passed these guys from the Texas-New Mexico Power Company. Passed a bunch of other convoys too.

These guys were from Illinois. Replacing poles in East Windsor.

Going along the Belt Parkway on LI, it was amazing how big some of the concrete chunks of sea wall that had broken off and come on land were.

Here along the Belt by Bath Beach you can see a blackhawk helicopter in the distance over what I guess is Coney Island. There was a Chinook but it is behind the tree.

Sandy causes so much damage to New York and New Jersey shore lines. My prayers to all those suffering from the storm.

But watching TV the last few days then remembering the Tsunami disaster in Japan last year. Comparing the two disasters, Japanese people suffered a lot more (mainly because of no warning of the earthquake then tsunami), but Japanese seem to handle their miserable better than us.

Those people in the disaster area in Japan stayed calm, no yelling, no demanding of hand out even after a full week without food, water and electricity.

Just 2-3 days after Sandy, people are yelling at FEMA officials demanding free food, free fuel ...

Another thing. Why didn't they evacuated even when there was a mandatory order ? Why didn't people buy gasoline, water, non-perishable food ... before Sandy landed on Monday night ? They had warning about it 3-4 days ahead. They don't take care of themselves and they want government take care of them.

I have many displaced friends from NJ barrier islands. They are not allowed to even survey the damage to their homes. Apparently some lowlifes are bypassing the bridges, are crossing the bays on boats and looting. I bet a bunch of people who did evacuate wished they did not, so at least they could survey the damage, take steps to prevent mold, and protect against the looters.

Instead they sit on the mainland, frustrated and have no idea how the future plays out, and powerless to do anything about it. I think I would be venting my anger at officialdom as well. I know it. The Extreme arrogance of Officialdom in NJ was the main reason I left, and now I can see it rear its ugly head from 2800 miles away.

The scope of the destruction is Vast. I don't even know how rebuilding starts. Apparently they can't even shut off the leaking natural gas lines. Estimates of when residents can return are months in some cases, I've read.

The few pictures I've seen from my former stomping grounds are shocking.

Many of the people who did not evacuate flooded areas, not on the barrier islands, probably had no where to go. Many of them rely on public transportation in such an urban armpit. Now they have no power, no food left, and no means to get any of it, and no idea when life can return to a semblance of what used to be normal.

It's going to get uglier. This current culture does not handle inconvenience well.

Hope the forecast Nor Easter next week in the same area does not pan out.

Are you implying our rotund governator by this, or do you mean ANY/ALL officials?? (YES, he does have a well-deserved rep for being a Tony Soprano-like bully/hothead, something those of a particular political persuasion/worldview ADORE about him, and is the actual reason why they want to nominate him to a POTUS candidate in '16.)

Any and all officials with few exceptions.

Those with political power and the gestapo like tactics of the police forces in the coastal communities filled me with an overwhelming contempt for humanity, something I cannot shake to this day.

For those on LI, there is gas at the Hess and Gulf at Exit 83 (No. Ocean Ave), at least there was until supplies ran out. The US gas at Exit 64 also had some today, per the girl at Starbucks.

The Hess had a bad line when we went by, the Gulf, not so bad.

The egg throwing at UI workers is in Bridgeport, CT.
The National Guard was sent to Bridgeport to stop looting. (search yahoo "Sandy looting" and you will find a lot more stories)

I live 15 miles north of Bridgeport. We also lost power. No looting, no crime; some people bought their own generators, began cleanup...

In the example of CT looting I posted above, the areas that have looting are the same areas that have high crime rates.

Bridgeport has a minor league stadium near I-95. The city put Jersey barriers to block off streets near the stadium to keep people from making a wrong turn into the higher crime neighborhoods. Bridgeport firemen have to request a police escort before responding to fires in the highest crime areas.

I will try to say this in a way that does not get a lock or ban.
The difference: A sense of "responsibility" and having worked for what you own, versus an "entitlement mentality" that spends their life collectiing EBT cards, free cell phones, free HUD/Section 8 housing, free money with no work requirement... (I am not referring to disabled, Social Security, or unemployment benefits)
