Yes, Irene was bad but I don't think she was over 900 miles wide either...

Weather forecasters are [censored] if the do, [censored] if they don't. If they knew this was potentially going to be a record type storm and didn't inform the public, and people died from flooding, everyone would be up in arms. When they do warn of the dangers using science and technology, people blow it off and think supernatural forces will magically pull it away from the coast.

The storm is doing exactly as forecast and it is strengthening. In fact, the models have under-forecast the strengthening of the storm due to the interaction with the jet stream trough.

Stay safe guys.

But.. but... but... it's not franken-storm yet! Still needs the gulp of coold air and that front from out west. Has not grown into its clobberer yet. Snowshoe, WV is going to get snow, imagine!

I'm going to monday morning quarterback when it's monday morning. Figuratively. In the words of EVERY WEATHERMAN EVERYWHERE, at the end of the day, when all is said and done.

Reporting snowstorms, the media forgets about the blizzard of 78.Massachusetts highways were awash with trapped vehicles because the snow came down faster than they could plow it.The cars didnt get cleared out for days and days.
I dont believe thats happened since.

Funny thing though, the storm that really knocked power out for 21 days+ a few years ago was totally missed by the forecasters.
Sometime i don't think they can forecast what they are having for lunch.
NOT! This doesn't look good. I am in the washinton DC area, and it's been raining since last night. It's windy outside plus we just lost power and it's getting cold!

All the best.

Bob (on the north shore of Lake Erie... the good shore in this event)

Measurement is from the bottom of the trough to the top of the swell. Compared to level water, waves would be 12' high...still pretty good for the Great Lakes.

I feel really bad for the affected areas and people, but enjoy reading the obligatory macho comments about what a small deal natural disasters like this are.

Maybe because the folks that own most of the homes along the NJ and DE shore are 1%ers?

Here's hoping the storm's coastal impact IS overhyped.

Irene was supposed to be a direct hit, and my sump pump never even came on. We had one branch in the yard.

I sure hope we will fare the same with this one, but it looks like it isnt the case.

This is a picture that a cousin sent from last night... This is a place we like to get breakfast at on Long Beach Island. This was last night high tide. Landfall is to occur just a little bit south of here tonight at 8pm or so...

I wish all the best for our Northern friends. I've done the hurricane thing, and it's not pleasant. I don't wish that on anybody. My house is built to the newer (and much tougher) standards. I sustained no damage. My neighbor was not so lucky and after the first storm, all his furniture was out on the street.

He spent the days following the first storm getting drunk, and the situation got worse by the hour. It nearly cost him his life.

Storms can be devastating in many ways, and how people handle the stress is a big part of the problem.

The storm seems to be picking up strength, I have a feeling we will be without power real soon.

I doubt ours will be on long... Hopefully dinner will be done cooking. It is coming on shore at lower Cape May County.

Our lights have started dipping a lot. The rain has stopped. Were a few miles out as the crow flies from Philadephia.

Im heading to BNL later in the week... Hope you guys up there stay afloat!

We are supposed to feel the effects of it this evening. 60Km/h winds are what they are calling for here, which really isn't that bad. However, our closest power plants (that aren't hydro electric) are all on the shore of lake Ontario, not all that far away.....
