Are there any store brands that do not dumb down the add pack?
I know for a fact taht Napa oil is Vavoline with a lesser add pack as this is what Vavloline told me.

Each different formulation requires expensive sequence testing to get the ILSAC certification. I can imagine the same formula is used regardless of the bottle it ends up in. THe Valvolined name brand is a marketing method and marketing draws a premium price. Same can be said for mobil 5000 and many of the relables it has. Any differences we may observe in UOA's is likely noise from differnt batches.

Not knowing for sure if Valvoline Conventional and Napa Conventioal are exactly the same makes it hard to sleep at night. I want cutting edge conventional. Best base oil. If I knew for certain Napa was the same I would run it instead. Especially when it is on sale. That's why they will not tell you either way.

I can tell the difference between store brand and brand name food products most of time. Sometimes I prefer the store brand actually. I don't know what this has to do with oil but it popped in my head.

We've seen a recent UOA of Carquest and it was identical to the latest Valvoline premium conventional formulation: 600 ppm phosphorous, 800 ppm zinc, 1500 ppm calcium, and 300 ppm sodium.

It would cost Valvoline to substantially change the formulation, especially the base stock IMO.

I have noticed recently that Autozone advertises Peak Motor Oil. Is it their store brand, or is it available elsewhere. Who makes it and is it of decent quality? I presume it is SM GF-4.

I know a foreign car mechanic who swears by CarQuest Synthetic. Probably because it works and CarQuest is closer to his store than Napa or that one place that starts with a W.

Thank you for sharing that. I was afraid that I was the only one that felt that way.

You too? This may be contagious. I don't recommend watching too many classic Twilight Zones. That "realization" cued music will end up being an earworm ..but not for the right reasons.

Good luck!

Motor oil makes it hard for you to sleep at night?

The thought of losing more money in the stock market, or whether my day at the office is gonna turn out like the antithesis of a good fishing trip is what keeps me up at night!

I've got a big leak in my stupid [censored] sprinkler system. That kept me up watching convention coverage last night.

But my Dad's old truck just got a fresh fill of Napa 5w-20. What the heck did I just do - I put 5w-20 conventional in a vehicle with 225,000 miles. I digress. The truck is gonna sit outside at our cabin at 10,000 feet above sea level and will likely encounter a few unaided starts at 10 to 20 below 0. I'm confident. battery is brand new. oil is the least of my worries.

I've been using O'Reilly 10w30 dino for the last few months on two of my vehicles for Auto-Rx treatments. I did a UOA sample on my 2000 Tundra after the first rinse phase. Although it sheared to close to a 20 grade, the add pack and wear metal readings were as good or better than any other SM rated oil that I've seen recently.

I have no idea who manufactures it for O'Reilly, and I can't vouch for any quality control either.

I know that large chain stores or home repair outlets can have the specifications changed for products. Things like Pledge furniture polish, window cleaners, etc.. They don't work as well as retail versions.
Maybe oil is on their list, if their big enough to have enough clout.

Not exactly. The additive suppliers (Chevron-Oronite, Lubrizol, Infineum (ExxonMobil & Royal Dutch Shell), Afton, maybe others), have approved additive packages that are blended with base oil from an interchange chart. This eliminates the testing of each formulation and gives the blenders a choice of base oils that are all suitable depending on price and availability.

ExxonMobil has stated that their bulk GF-4 oil has a shorter service life than their bottled Mobil 5000. The store brand oils may be something like this.

Well, I guess the NAPA brand would be fine. Given the excellence of Valvoline, I would think NAPA brand would be pretty decent. If you toss in a little additive booster you'll be right on the mark.

No, the Peak motor oil is not their store brand. It is sold elsewhere but only by a few outlets. It is still relatively new and there is a sale on it this month for 9.99 for five qts and a filter.

Oddly enough, the Autozone brand, used to be the "Coastal" oil...now it's branded Autozone and it comes in an orange bottle.

I think Car Quest oil is also Valvoline.
