"Stop running this script?"

I get a problem browsing with my Internet Explorer 8 that is unique to the BITOG site. I sometimes get the following message...

"Stop running this script?

A script on this page is causing your web browser to run slowly.
If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive."

Whether I click on YES or NO, it iterates through this around 10 times before the page becomes responsive, burning about 2 minutes of my time to view a page. It does this on my home computer and work computer. No other site gives me this grief. What is causing this, and how can I remedy it?

Hmmmmmmm... I am not convinced that the browser is the issue. If there is, for example, a script being called from some third-party site (as a considerable number of javascripts and libraries are; eg. the social media "share" buttons that appear in these threads nowadays and Google Analytics are scripts that would likely be called from a remote location) then the error could have been thrown if the server providing the script was hiccuping for a few minutes. I pull the jQuery library from Google's servers on sites that I design and even those sometimes are not as responsive as I'd like. If the problem has gone away on its own then I'd chalk it up to a script being called from a remote server that just didn't "show up" exactly when it was supposed to.

Having said that, for the love of all things holy please stop using IE if it is feasible. Firefox and/ or Chrome should be able to migrate your bookmarks and passwords and such upon their installation, and making one of them your default browser should also be trivial.

Download and use Google Chrome.

You will find several U Tube videos to aid in setup, etc.

Probably still using Win XP, so IE8 is the native browser. Chrome should solve the issue as many have stated.

IE8 it is a normal message for an intense script somewhere. You likely have slow hardware and a timeout is hitting or some sort of infinite loop in some bad code splattered into page.

Get off IE8 as it is very flaky. Also developers rejoiced at its death and have moved on. It is still supported though by Microsoft since it is standard with Windows 7.

I have Windows 7 at work and Win XP at home.

On a somewhat related note, Yahoo Mail has a notice on their page that they won't do more than Basic Mail with IE8, and suggest to upgrade to Firefox or IE11.

I'll do something, and I'll let you know how it turns out.

Don't even bother with IE11, get a real web browser like Chrome or Firefox.

Nothing to do with him using IE.
I have gotten the EXACT SAME message on FF28 and FF29.

But i only have to click 'stop' ONCE and it does stop.
It doesn't freeze or anything.

IIRC correctly i got that message while streaming from amazon prime... after I tried to FF or rewind several times quickly.

It'll cease attempting to load or execute the external script, so clicking once (per page refresh) would suffice.

If either an IE, FF or anyone else gets this message again it might be useful to try to copy and paste any information *about* the offending script. It might enable someone to explain what's going on and it ALSO might help the BITOG admins fine-tune how scripts get loaded and how they execute and where they come from, etc.

Now that I think about it, when I get into this loop merry-go-round, the bar on the bottom shows it's trying to load some amazon-something page. I cleared my browser in hopes this would go away.

I used to get that alot with my old computer until I added more RAM. Now I never see it.

I tried loading Google Chrome, but my computer said I couldn't, until I update Windows. Windows said I couldn't update for some reason.
