I am interested in investing in penny stocks that have a solid foundation or growing companies in energy, such as in the Bakken reserves.

I am also looking for a very good online stock broker for Canada.

I am looking to start a portfolio with 3-4 good companies with a lot of room for growth over the next 5 years.

Thanks for any and all advice you may have guys!

Id start by reading the newsletter called "Canadian Edge" and seeing the recommendations there.

Yes. You can get some ideas of the picks from using stock gumshoe.

Its just a start for getting some leads. Do your DD!

The statistics are not good.
The odds say you make more on 6-7 dollar NASDAQ stocks (or Vegas)
I guess you feel better with 500,000 shares .001 than 100 shares of some stock at 5 but it's bad math

Right now I am interested in Encana, looks pretty sound. Stock is only trading at around 18$ right now.

I'd be interested in a cheap stock but it is very hard to do a DD using the internet. Everything seems scammy.

You would literally need to visit the company in person when you are 99% sure before you purchase a lot of stock.

I mean, paying a few hundred dollars for a plane ticket on a good lead would be worth it.

For example check this out:

These guys are a $0.75 a share, but how to know if they have any substance as a company.

Penny Stocks are risky and mostly hype...don't fall for the 10 bagger returns they may give you. IMO right now is a time to sit on cash.

The professional fund managers cannot pick great stocks consistently and they have the skill, resources to do analysis and if they call the CEO, they will get through. Why do people think they can do a good job of picking stocks? If you read something about the company, so has every other investor. If you hear insider info and invest on the news before its published on the company's website or in a newspaper, thats illegal and you could go to jail.

Does Vanguard make smart penny stock choices?

I looked into it a bit, but would like to know some pros and cons as I never heard of them before.

I've made good money on penny stocks, but lost a lot as well. I'd avoid penny stocks, small-mid caps IMO is the best bet.

I think this is the way to go. If you're in it for the long run, its simple, less stress and works.
