My cousin recently changed the motor oil in my neighbor's 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited, which (I think?) has a 1.8L engine.

The oil was black, thin, and very stinky. I've never smelled used oil that stinky before in my life.

I can't say for sure that it was fuel contamination because I didn't recognize the mix of odors. Smelled like hot used motor oil plus something else. Fuel maybe? We have no prior experience with an engine this new.

Is a 2011 Hyundai 1.8L a direct injection engine? If so, this would be the first direct injection engine that my cousin and I have ever touched.

No, the 1.8 "Nu" in the 2011 Elantra is MPI.

What was the OCI and type of oil previously used?

I have no idea. Some type of quickie lube place used whatever oil for prior oil change. I wasn't smart enough to read the oil change sticker in the window, which was pulled off and thrown away. I wish I'd read the sticker.

We put Quaker State High Mileage Full Syn 0w-20 in it.

Next time I'm going to put Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Syn 5w-30 in it. Unless someone thinks that's a bad idea.

I think 5w-20 is the normal specified viscosity in owners manual. Is that correct?

According to Oreilly website, 5w20, 5w30, & 10w30 are all compatible. Does that sound correct?

Above is an excerpt from the owners manual -- 5W-20 is recommended for "fuel economy" (aka CAFE).

5-30 QSUP is just fine.

Imho, if oil changes were irregular with long OCIs then may be VRP is a good choice for at least one OCI.
I agree, but she'd never pay for that. As it is, I'm paying the cost and providing the labor to help her. So VRP ain't gonna happen.

What I am willing to do (since I'm paying for it) is do her next oil change early at 4K miles and next time use a good 5w30. Likely Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Syn 5w30. That dream can come true.

On your next oil change for this vehicle, put in Quaker State Euro 5W-40, when you do this, you will thank me later.

40 weight oil is a bit too thick for that engine, and it's not your car to experiment on either. How much cheaper is QS oil vs VRP? I may be missing something, you are paying for oil and doing the oil change already, and $3 is deal breaker? I thought you were trying to help the lady out of your kindness?

It's not my car to experiment on either. So 5w30 is a safe bet.

Quaker State UP FS costs $20 for 5 quarts when on sale at Walmart, and it's often on sale. Regular price $23. I assumed Valvoline Restore & Protect costs a lot more. How does VRP cost?

Yes, I'm helping her out of kindness, but kindness has a budget. Even my own car's maintenance has a budget.

VRP is often $29 at mist Walmart. At the one near me, I was able to get the VRP 0W-20 on clearance for $20 recently. It wasn't selling well at that store. QS is always significantly cheaper.
