Still need some oil advice

hello. im a noob when it comes to cars but since i just recently purchased my first car, ive been ridiculously protective of my new baby -- 2011 hyndai sonata 2.0t limited

i spent days reading up threads in this forum but still need some advice...

i live in southern california. temps during winter start at mid 30s to low 40s (recently anyway).

the manual suggests using a 5w-40 and if i cant find any, 5w30 will be sufficient.

i narrowed down my research to these:
Mobil 1 0w-40
Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40


are there any other 40 syn oils out there that will be good for my turbo engine? seems like all of 5w-40 are rare in stores (buying online has lame shipping costs!) and Mobil 1 0w-40 is the most available. but i am a little hesitant with that one since i have read multiple responses saying that it likes to be consumed. speaking of (a little off topic), how do i tell how much oil i need to add? i.e., knowing to top off with just 1 quart.

i heard castrol 0w30 is good and a little thicker than most 30s. i saw it available at my local pep boys. it was made in germany. too bad they only had 3 quarts.

any comments/responses/advices would be greatly appreciated.

Rotella 'T6' 5W-40 synthetic.

Excellent, inexpensive option for a car like that.

I'm very, very suprised Hyundai recommends a 5W-40 for a passenger car????

I am liking the Rotella T6 suggestion above.

Other than that, there is Castrol Syntec 5w-40 that is carried by some auto stores (AutoZone for example).

As for Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40, you can get it with free shipping directly from Pennzoil's website, alas, it's not the cheapest oil.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is a safe bet, too. It's carried by many auto part stores and goes on sale now and then.

i was looking at that oil too, but only found it for $6.5/qt @ walmart or $19.99/gal at pep boys. it comes out to be a little more than Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 @ walmart (which i plan on using next since i got the jug already)

and im assuming they recommended 5w-40 cuz of the turbo engine. their non-turbos use 5w-20 or 5w30 at most.

If Mobil 1 0w-40 is the most available to you then it's a no brainier,0w40 is very high quality oil that will protect your engine well.

also you could do a used oil analysis down the line see how well it's working in your application but the formulation of this oil should be sufficient.

the "great bang for the buck" statement certainly applies. i personally think the car is worth more than what you pay for. the turbo accelerates smoother than my 02 CL-S when it was brand new. when you need the speed, it kicks in like a roller coaster feeling without much of the jerk.

thats what i told myself too. but after browsing this forum the past 2 weeks, i noticed a high number of responses requiring the need to add an additional quart after 3k mi or so due to consumption. i guess i should try it before i say no.

You should. FYI, I used it in my old Audi A4 1.8T and did not notice any oil consumption.

The 0w-40 Mobil 1 should be a great oil, but since you dont need a 0w or 5w for that matter, Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 or just Mobil 1 10w-40 should be OK as long as the vi are roughly equivalent. Leaning hard on the 0w-40 and its slack wax basestock - sim to shell Helix with a more appropriate viscosity. The Shell Diesel oil HTHS and high vis would be a paaty pueper, IMO.

I'm using M10W40 in my Volvo S60 2.5T. I bought the car with 19k and had the oil changed to M1 before taking delivery. The car now has gone a little less than 30K with M1 exclusively. Two used oil analysis suggest that the oil is doing an excellent job protecting the engine using Volvo's recommended oci of 7500 miles. Given that you would most likely have to order the PU to get 5W40 and you can buy M10W40 almost anywhere (including many Walmarts for less than $7 per qt), this seems like a no brainer to me as well.

I'm using 0W40 year round. It's hard to imagine that the 0 would be a problem anytime of the year. The 5W40 and 0W40 should be essentially the same at operating temprature. It's hard to imagine that 0W oil would be a problem at startup, even during the summer and it should be a benefit at startup during the winter.

BTW, in almost 30k I haven't had to add any oil. Different engine for sure, but oil consumption hasn't been an issue for me.

thanks for the replies. looks like 0w-40 is where im heading. now with just a couple more questions...

i did notice that mobil has a Mobil 1 ESP 5w40, with the green cap and bottle. how does this 5w-40 compare to the widely used 0w-40?

The esp oils are designed to protect the emmissions systems for deisel engines. You want the 0W40

Yes, the 0w40 will work all year round.

^ Best? Best depends on the application and intended use. All of their oils are targeted at different uses.

one thing i have noticed is that lots of people are fans of the 0w-40 and use it. so where does that leave the 5w30? seems like if your car is spec'd to use 5w30, might as well run 0w-40.
