Hi All,

Well, I have narrowed down my choices to these and need some advice. It comes down to either Royal Purple 10w-40 or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40. Both are fully synthetic and appear to be very good options for my Volvos since the manuals state 15w40 for the heat of Phoenix I live in. So what does everyone think? They both seem to fit my needs but I am tired of switching oils and want to stick with one, so that is why I need some input. Thank you.

coffee, my choices in order would be:

Mobil 1 5w-40
Rotella 5w-40
D1 15w40 (conventional)
RP 10w-40

Well, mainly because everyone keeps stating that a good Synthetic 5w-40 is better overall but I am open to other suggestions. I was hoping to find the Royal Purple 15w40 but they didn't seem to have it but I know it is a product that exists. I will make some calls today to see if anyone has it in stock.

What's wrong with Castrol Syntec 5W-40? I believe Auto Zone sells it. I would rather run that over all the M-1 issues we're seeing today (or) any all-diesel oil.

Well, I had already used the Rotella Synthetic and was hoping to use a "fully synthetic" oil this time around so that is why I was looking into RP or Mobil 1.

Any reasons not to run Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 at Walmart for $16 a gallon?

Are you an expert on his emission controls system?
Some vehicles have converter issues when switching to diesel oils.

Can you "guarantee" this thread-starter he will not have issues?

Sorry Coffee

I had no idea would post a response top Tempest this soon. It's good to see you made-mention of prior use with diesel oil. Posters like Tempest seem to think that if the diesel oils work well in their gas vehicles - then they will worik well in all gas vehicles.

We've all read enough poster reports here to know that's not true.

Actually I have never run it, nor did I say that I have. Also notice that my post was a question, not a statement.
I was simply trying to bring a lower cost option to the table.

Really? I don't seem to remember this as a being a big problem around here...

Rotella is an SL oil, so if the owners manual calls for an SL oil, it would be suitable for said application. Then again, i believe RoyalPurple is also SL rated instead of SM.

I'm not a huge synthetic fan. For my money, inexpensive conventional oils are hard to beat for value. Synthetics are indeed great, but in the vast number of applications in which they are used i do not believe consumers are getting their monies worth out of them.

For an older Volvo that allows for higher viscosity oils, there is nothing wrong with a good quality 10w40 like Castrol GTX or Valvoline. They will both give you the extra viscosity you are looking for in your older volvo engines.

If you decide to go ahead with high priced synthetic I would vote for Mobil 1 5w40. It's slightly cheaper and more widley available.

Royal Purple would definitely be my first choice out of those. It is a great oil would do great for you.

Thank you all again for the advice and input. I think the Mobil 1 is really my best option for availability as I made some calls and cannot get the Royal Purple.

Better over all than what ??? Run Delo 400 15w/40 first choice or Rotella 15w/40 second choice ,you won't find a better oil(s) at any price unless it is way below freezing .

Well, here is a quick update. I purchased the Mobil 1 5w40 tonight and changed it on both Volvos. I have got to say I am totally impressed already with the quality of the oil and it is the first time to my knowledge I have started a car after an oil change and not heard tapping while the oil circulates through the engine. The cars ran so smoothyl as well and I am anxious to take the out tomorrow for a drive. This is the first "fully synthetic" I have put in my cars and probably explains what I am experiencing but I just had to share my first impressions with you all. Thanks again for all the insight and help and at least I am running what the manual calls for now.

I'm just going to find out where coffee lives and change out the oil to what I think is best. Afterwards, I'll put a little tack weld on the drain plug so he can't change his mind again.
