So up until now I have never owned a decent car but I bought a 1998 volvo s90 with a 125k. I just put a new head on the car. So I really want to keep the car maintained. I drive 20 miles a day to work all highway miles. And other then my planned trip to orlando I live in michigan I wont be driving more then 10k a year.

I have read up on filters and seems like for the 11 bucks the royal purple filter seems like a great choice.

But again I have never used anything other then cheap oil and cheap filter.

So I'm looking for some advice.

Fellow Michigander here... RP makes high quality stuff. Their filters, from what I gather, are about equal to the Mobil extended drain filters that can be had on sale (Amazon had for 8$ and other sales pop up even better at times). If it's a new car (to you), I'd recommend a few short oil change intervals with a good cleaning oil if you're unsure how well it's been maintained to this point. After that, use a good synthetic you can find on sale (Pennzoil Platinum at Walmart when on sale is a great buy) and run to 7500 miles or so, then do a used oil analysis.

Well I can tell you the car is mint the engine bay is mint no leaks.

But the timing belt and tensioners were never changed at the 120k service.

Honestly you can save your money on a Royal Purple filter; just getting a quality filter (WIX filter, a NAPA Gold (which is a WIX), Purolator PureONE) are cheaper and often, more then enough for everything but excessively long OCI's. In fact a quality filter and an oil that meets your manufacturer recommendation (even if its not synthetic) should be perfect, if you change it at the recommended intervals. Its a Volvo; as long as you don't neglect it it should refuse to die.

Running quality synthetics though you *may* be able to change the oil less, but I wouldn't know for sure, as I'm unfamiliar with these cars so I can't even start to comment.

I'd get the timing belts and tensioners changed though. Those failing can grenade an interference motor.

Changing the oil unnecessarily early on because you "just got it" is a flawed mantra people tout because "things must be dirty".

That S90 will be happy with a couple of 3k intervals with Rotella T6 if you can find it in 5w30 (10w30 would be ok, but a bit thick when cold in the midst of a Michigan winter), then 5-6k intervals after that, with Cujobob's recommended filter.

If you're not comfortable running a heavy duty oil on a regular basis, you might try Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Ultra after the first couple short intervals.

Thats what killed the head on the car. I already ordered the timing belt kit along with the new head.

I saw some pics of a wix filter smashed and twisted after 3k. I dont mind spending more on a filter if I'm getting a quality product.

I run t6 in all my bikes my current car and my gf's car but I do run 15 40 put over a 100k with that in my gm 3800 series 2.

10w40 is a bit thick for a MI winter. Yes, the pressure goes up, but that's because the flow is decreasing due to the thicker oil. I wouldn't run a 20 in that engine because it'll be a bit thin, but 30 is about right at least in the winter; you might get away with 5w40 in the summer.

Mobil Super HM 5w30 with a Bosch Premium 3321 filter for 5k. The old Peugot 2.9 I6 with run nicely. Yes that Swedish box has a Peugot designed motor.

You're getting a quality filter with a WIX. How the [censored] do you equate a physically damaged filter with inferior quality?

One month and your a filter.expert? RP exceeds the Mobil 1 filter, which is just a k&n with black paint. For the money they usually cost they are a complete rip off when you can get a 100% synthetic wire backed media for the same or less money.
RP, fram ultra, napa platinum, and amzoil are 100% synthetic wire backed media. Complete over kill unless doing 15k drains, but very high quality!
If it were me and I had to have the best, I would go with fram ultra. $9 at Wal-Mart! But just a plain old bosch premium from autozone or O'Reillys will suite you well.

In my opinion the royal purple filter is overkill, I would go with a Baldwin or Purolater Classic.

Yeah, the Peugot engine was a 90 degree V6, not an inline 6.

Anyway, I need to ask, turbo or non-turbo? I would never run anything less than fully synthetic engine oil in a turbo gasoline engine.
