Well, y'all are going to think I'm smoking crack or blowing smoke, but this is true. I went over to check out the restoration work on the Camry this afternoon on the way home. I got an interesting greeting from the tech working the car. He has the hood, fender, front cover, and underneath damaged parts all removed.

But he had "that look" on his face. Come to find out that when they removed the fender panel, they discovered a substantial ant's nest inside the panel. I haven't driven the car into any pools of honey lately, so this is news to me. I hadn't even noticed any of the little buggers myself, until he pointed out some survivors still straggling about the floor of the shop and the engine compartment. He assured me that they'd all be gone before the painting starts. I hope so.

Any entomologists out there? What the heck sort of ant would want to nest in the fender of a BLACK car that gets parked under the hot summer Florida sun every day???

Did you happen to hit an animal with the car earlier? Or got pummeled by fruits?

I`ve had ants nests several times underneath my car`s front facia when I`ve gone a couple of days without driving.

How did he deal with the ants? I can think of several ways to eliminate them in a body shop, mostly having to do with paint guns and various chemicals available in a body shop.

(this is not off-topic) - My heat pump quit 2 years ago in the heat of the summer. Tech came out and found the problem:

Ants were starting to nest in the 30 Amp solenoid that powered the Motor/Compressor outside...said it was a common occurrence...but that thing is hot, noisy, vibrates and has 230V running through it...your fender sounds far more hospitable...

Never had ants up here, but mice like to hang out in my air intake, just outside the air filter. They also like to burrow up into the pad on the underside of the hood. In the fall when it starts to get cool, that's when they move in. From a mouse's perspective, I'm sure it's very safe and very warm in there.

In the heat of summer satellite dishes focus all sort of intense solar radiation at the LNBs. (Little things on the tripods that actually catch the signal) Bees/ wasps/ hornets love making nests in there. You'd think they'd fry!
