"Nearly 113,000 Jeeps in the United States are being recalled after reports of debris being found in some of the vehicle's engines, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reported.

The news comes after Michigan-based Stellantis issued a separate Jeep recall earlier this month following reports the high voltage battery in some other SUVs may fail and spark a fire.

The new alert is for 112,859 Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids at risk of engine failure due to sand contamination in the engine, according to the NHTSA report.

An internal investigation determined those SUVs "may have been built with 2.0L engines that could be contaminated with sand from the casting process," Stellantis spokesperson Frank Matyok released in statement"

This time, it's sand casting, not metal debris.

Good that it's been recalled if it's a problem. I want to think that it's due to collectively what buyers expect and have fought for over decades that finally have come to at least reluctant recalls. Buying older equipment has its advantages from my angle.

"A remedy is currently under development, according to the agency, and affected Jeep owners will be notified by the company when service can be scheduled."

Say what? If there was just some sand in the engine, wouldn't the oil filter and/or a couple of oil changes take care of it? You cannot believe a GD thing these car manufacturers first tell you about a recall. We are talking about Jeeps/Grand Cherokees that were built from 06/07/23 to 03/04/25. How are all you Jeep owners feeling about your purchase?

If it is sand debris it could be in the coolant passages.

But yes I wonder what it really is also.

Well, my parents bought one with the 5.7L, so just fine, lol.

Do they sand cast engines anymore? I thought it was all lost foam at this point?

So we don't believe all the other OEM's problems were machining debris but we now believe this is sand casting?
It is still quite common, very cost effective and fast as tooling is much easier and faster, and this is an industry of low margins. Depending on the firm, that flexibility might be even more important. The surface finish is not the best though and post processing needs to be intensive, especially if it is made for efficiency based taxation market. I don`t think there is much excuse to these kind of errors though, other than executives` comepsation being based on year end stock price or profit, and it might work well for them to cut corners and pump the production, and deal with the problem after pocketing a nice bonus or leave the problem to the next executive in line.
