"Chrysler Group LLC said Monday it is expanding a recall of its Jeep Liberty SUV to include another 137,000 vehicles to address rust concerns in cold-weather states.

In March, Chrysler said it was recalling 209,000 2004-05 Jeep Liberty vehicles that were sold or are currently registered in states where winter streets are salted. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigating whether the recall should be expanded. Chrysler has now agreed to recall the 2006-07 models.

In total, Chrysler has now called back 346,000 vehicles to address the issue.

NHTSA began investigating the issue in April 2011 and upgraded the probe in September to an engineering analysis.

Chrysler said some vehicles may have rear lower control arms — part of the suspension system — that can crack because of rust attributed to the heavy use of road salt in some areas. In February, Chrysler gave NHTSA the results of a study of the issue, but there was no data for 2006-07.

Chrysler agreed that the 2006-2007 model year vehicles would be monitored."

Ouch! At least they are dealing with it.

My roommate has a 2004 with 210K miles on it. The multiple oil leaks from every fluid containing part have kept the underside rust free.

My mom has an early Liberty. She lives in Iowa, which has really bad winters and really bad rust problems.

I'll make sure to pass this info along.

Nissan has a similar TSB for the left front strut tower.

The last time I was in for an induction cleaning service they checked it and it was fine. They sprayed some rust proofing resin on it for good measure.
