I'm about 4k into a fill of T6 on my Volvo, and I'm thinking of switching to another 5w-40 for no particular reason. I originally decided on T6 after reading these forum a lot.
That being said, here are my answers to the questions.
1. '89 Volvo 740 turbo
2. The manual says SF (ha) 5w-30 up to 68 degrees, 10w-30 from -4 to 104, and 15w-40 above 14 degrees. I've run into a lot of people with the same engine who use 15w-40 all the time, but I noticed a difference in cranking when I switched from 15w to 5w, so I'd like to stay with a 5w. The manual says 5k OCIs, but I'll probably change slightly before that.
3. Northwest Washington
4. I think I drive it slightly harder than 'normal' but I don't race or anything.
5. Most of the time, the driving is short (~10 miles), although I do drive a couple hundred miles on the highway every couple weeks.
6. Well, it used to use a fair amount of oil (1qt/1000 miles) on 5w-30 and 15-40, but since I've been using T6, it has gone down to (so far) less than a quart for 4k miles. I suspect about half of the oil loss is from a leaky camshaft seal, which is getting fixed in the next month.

I'd like to say with a synthetic because of the turbocharger (and besides that, I think all 5w-40 is syn anyways?). The O'Reilly near me has a sale on Castrol 5w-40 ($30 for 5qts and a filter), and I always see the Lubro Moly oils at Napa, but when I started to look at it, there are a lot 5w-40s out there (I counted 13 different ones I can get a stores around me). I'm not dedicated to changing from T6, if it is the best option out there.
Thanks!

That stuff is amazing, many Mazda disi owners use that and swear by it. It shows good Uoa's. I'd say stick with it. Probably a great fit for your Volvo.

+1 great oil for older euro engines. Best economics to stay with it for the desired mileage...

Can always change oils next time.

The recommended 5k OCI is with dino, almost all 5W40 are syn therefore you can extend the OCI to 7-8k, at the very least to 5-6k, no need to change syn oil at less than 5k.

Rotella T6 5W40 is very good syn oil, since it reduces your oil consumption substantial I see no reason to change to another 5W40.

But, if you like to experience another brand then no harm will be done to your engine, if it causes your engine to consume more oil than T6 then you can always go back to T6 in the future.

Welcome to BITOG!
It's really hard to go wrong with T6.

I wouldnt be surprised if either T6 5W40 or M1 0W40 were capable of 10,000 mile drains in that engine although I would want a UOA to confirm.

I think any of the oils you mentioned would be more than capable of 5,000 mile oci.

My 1.8T Audi is loving T6. Slight turbo whine (when I got it at 135k miles) has faded away and disappeared. I'm at 142k now and just changed the oil again. TBN was still 3.5 after 7k miles.

Sold her at 154k and changed the valve cover gasket and cam tensioner gasket about 2 weeks before I sold it. The engine was SPOTLESS inside. Given that the 1.8T of this vintage was prone to sludge, I attribute this to the extra detergency of the Rotella T6. Highly recommended.
