NA cars are definitely "fixed" service, with whatever oil spec the sticker/manual suggest. "Flexible" means running 504/508 oil and "fixed" in countries with poor fuel require 502 (on the same motors that would run 504/508 here). If anyone has doubts about going thicker being an issue.

The maintenance manual also says that intervals should be shortened with severe service, which I'd wager is most cars that don't strictly drive 30 minute freeway commutes with no traffic in perfect weather.

Heck, I'm *in* warranty and just moved up from 0w20 to 0w40 in my Malibu 1.5t. I just can't risk the dilution staying at bay when I idle 30 min a day in the student pick-up line waiting on my son. I see no issue with a 3.5hths oil as your choice. However, VW508 (0w20) approved oils have excellent UOA as shared here on BITOG.

My cars all call for VW502 oils and that's what I run. If they called for 504s I'd run that.

I run Castrol 0W40 in my 1.4T Jetta. The 18's were spec'd for 40 weight. New gen Jetta, same engine, 20 weight. CAFE perhaps? Seems to run smoother. Same MPG 37 around town, 45 on the highway. 5-7k OCI here.

Was the 1.4 ever called to run VW502 00 (40 grade)?

No practical difference in a 30 and 40 when we're talking VW approvals.

M1 FS 0W-40 or 0W/5W-30 ESP would be my choice.

When they were introduced, yes.
