This might be a little long, but I have an I/O engine that is a 1980 GM Block, I believe to be a 1.6L, Chevette engine. It has sat for 5 years. I have replaced the starter solenoids, which were shot from moisture. It turns over fine, and has fresh gas in the tank. My problem is that it doesn't seem to be getting any spark. I replaced the coil, put in new plugs. The wires and cap and rotor seem to be in good shape. I have also cleaned all wire connections that I can think of. After all this even if I give it a shot of starter fluid, it still won't fire. Any ideas?

Check the ground to the engine block. Little things like this are usually the culprit. Test resistance on the wires, check to see if your getting power to the coil with the ignition on.

Thanks, I will see about the power to the coil. I did clean the ground on the engine. Could the ignition where the key is be the problem even if it turns the engine over?

Could be because the ignition keys first detent is to activate the ignition circuit. If for some reason its not, then the switch may be bad or the connections at the starter solenoid are bad.
