Start up smoke on Firebird

Nonono....

I am being civil bro, not putting you down at all.

15w40 will not break down and you will get better oil flow and better startup protection.

Don't worry, I did not take it that way. I just have gotten alot advice from guys have never owned an old tech V8 like mine.

I do agree with you on the start up. When I tried delo 15w40, motor spunn alot easier. The reasons I was uneasy about the 15w40 were several things.
When hot my rockers were alot noisier. Also, my Holley, which is tuned about as good as one can get still runs a little rich and with the overlap on my cam I worry about fuel dilution. This is another reason I run the 20w50. And lastly, this may just be in my head but, the car seems to have more power with the thicker oil. I don't know maybe it seals my rings better for better compression. He he.

Now, I will tell you this. I have played around with some 20w50's and some are a little thicker than others. I used to run Valvoline Racing 20w50 but quit because it was so thick, like honey. The Havoline is a bit thinner and flows a little better. The RP upon observance seemed thick like the Valvoline Racing.

After I fix the front seal on my trans. I will probably go back to the Havoline. I know I probably think to much and believe it or not, I would really like to use a 15w40 but I'm not sure its right for this particular motor. Any thoughts
Blazer.

I don't think I have to replace my seals either. What Hi Rev is saying makes since. It going to be a week are so before I can run the Bird again because I have to pull my transmission due to fluid coming out the front seal.

Golden Rod, I am running 20w50 in my motor because that is what I prefer. I'm kinda the black sheep of this forum who prefers a heavier oil. Pontiac's have large bearing surfaces. I've tried 20w50 and the 15w40 but my motor runs better and smoother with the 20w50. I live in south Texas and my car is rarely driven in cold weather. Besides aren't 10w40's known for breaking down?

No they won't.

I would go for a 15w40 instead of that thick of an oil.

Using that thick of an oil won't yield any benefits and actually will be hindering some of the horsepower.

Ok guys, I started up my car yesterday and guess what no smoke. It did smoke a little after idling awhile when I would give it gas but I believe this is from my carb loading up. I believe the power valve is out. Ok, next on my list: rebuild carb.

Sweet, as the new oil conditions the seals and possibly rejuvinates them, it will more than likely get better and better.

Great to hear it is working out for you.

You will get better protection and luvrication with synthetic regardless of weight anyways.
