At least once-a-week, one of my co-workers would purchase a Starbucks drink in the morning. I always make a habit of asking for their receipt since it is redeemable for a cold Grande Drink for only $2 on the same day.

How many of you take advantage of this offer? What drink do you guys usually buy? I like the "tuxedo" that they have there.

Starbucks has never had to, in the past, offer discounts to sell product. However, in the current market/economy they are being hurt by Mickey D's and Dunkin. Last week's (or the week before) issue of "The Economist" has a nice article if interested.

I do not get near on often but when I have on nearby I do. In Michigan usualy when their is a Starbucks near by their is no Tim Hortnon, No Dunkin and no McDonalds either. I guess you have to live in a major city to get them all clustered together.

Dunkins Coffee is tasty has been for years but it not even close to competition for Starbucks I mean that is like comparing a Chevrolet to a Lotus sure they both have tires and a steering wheel but that is where the stop being comparable!!! Same thing for Tim Hortons not even close to same level of variety and flavors etc.....McDOnalds is just awful their is nothing premium about their coffee at all it the total junk that is like comparing a Wine wine to the stuff they make in Prisons in the toliet!

So their is no way that Star Bucks customer base is migrating to those other ones for anything other then price point! Their is nothing remotely similar. It is not an apples to apples comparison. I have no doubt that people are spending less money on high end coffee but the customer base for Starbucks is not migrateing to McDonalds!!! What is happening is that DUnkin,TIm Hortons have managed to keep their customer base becasue the price was never an issue andmost of those customers where their to eat either through the drive through in the morning or at lunch. McDonalds has managed to grow it's coffee market but it has not managed to sway people from Starbucks market as in conquest market etc........

Look at who made up most of Starbucks market!!! College kids and young professional and trendy old people that where wearing sandles in the 1960'sa nd burning their bra's!!! SO when you look at the economy and who is not working right now it makes sense that their market would contract a bit. The old people are having to help their kids that have no jobs and have lost their homes! The college kids are two busy working right now to have time to hang out... Those people that would not be regular customers but would occasionally drop in for that twice a year expensive cup of Joe are now staying at home and brewing their own coffee or getting it at work! Their are a lot of premium coffee'snow available at the grocery store!

When I travel I used to stop at Starbucks to use the Wifi and drink coffee....At 36 I was normally one of the oldest people in the place. It was always a good place to pick up young women!Their was normaly 2-3 people older then me often they stillhad onthe same flip flops they wore in the 1970's!!!LOL

Just had a Grande White Chocolate Mocha Frap for only $2. I might just have to start hanging out in front of the Starbucks in the morning and ask for peoples' receipts!

I've never stepped foot in one. But I'd be willing to bet that they are chock full of calories with little or no nutritional value.

You have never had Starbucks?

If you're comparing the regular McDonalds coffee, then I agree - it doesn't deserve to be called coffee. However, McDonalds has been opening McCafe outlets for some time now. It's typically a separate, second counter in a McDonalds restaurant that serves lattes, espressos, mochas... products very similar to Starbucks, both in price and in quality.

However, McCafes are not available in a lot of places, plus it's going to be a hard and long battle for McDonalds to actually steal customers away from Starbucks. It's like Hyundai trying to break into the luxury car market, trying to steal clientele away from MB, Lexus, etc. Can it happen? Sure, but it takes a while to change people's mindset.

McDonald's coffee here sells 10% Kona Blend. In fact most gas stations has the 10% Kona Blend, the cost of a 16 oz minus a quarter versus a 8oz at Ronald's Duck.
