Got almost 60k miles on OEM Goodyears so I’m looking at Michelin Defender LTX m/s2 in 265/65-18. Mainly road vehicle. Standard load and XL available. Advice please.

I would get the XL if towing on a regular basis. If not the standard load is fine.
Source-I have owned three of these trucks and tow all over the Rocky Mountain West.

Only tow a little when I’m getting firewood. Sold my boat couple of years ago and don’t plan to replace it anytime soon. If I get the XLs would I regret the stffer ride?

Not significantly stiffer. Just gives you a higher PSI to use if you tow. If towing is a non issue-go with the standard load.

I wouldn't bother with the xl. I towed an ext cab 96 sierra from houston to mexico on a car hauler with my yukon using standards which were about 4 years old at the time so not new either. A bit dry rotted and pretty worn and had no issue.

265/70r18 Toyo M55s in my son’s 2013 SLT.
I put LT tires on everything, including 245/70r17E General Arctic on my daughter’s 2022 Acadia.

If mainly on road and no towing, standard load tires will be good for your truck. XL may have stiffer side walls but I don’t think it will significantly affect the ride. If they are about the same price, get the XLs.

I've never had an issue with SL tires on a 1/2 ton in a non-heavily loaded towing application and all our trucks came with SL from the factory. That said, I almost always go with E range when replacing for the piece of mind when I'm up north taking wrong turns on two track.

I don't think that it will matter between the SL and HL load rating.
Cooper Endeavor Plus SL
Falken Wildpeak HT02 XL
Firestone Destination LE3 SL
