Anybody have sources for the stainless screen oil filters for the FF position. I have tp bypass and centrifuges on vehicles I want a permanent ff on.

Thanks
Dale

check past threads for Ultrafilter. I'm testing one now, and am sending a sample to Terry Dyson. There will be some information on how well they are working. I think UltraFilter has a new company name, but they make a good filter for about 99 bucks, retail.

I'm not sure that ff filters do much, and it's really important, after at least a little bit of filtering, that you have good flow. I don't think that we really know how much time the bypass valve spends off its seat, and with many filter designs that just washes already filtered gunk right back into the system. And as far as cleaning goes, you sure do have to be careful, but we've seen brand new ff filters with contaminated media. At least with a ss filter you can ditch the bypass valve, because you don't have a fragile paper element to protect. The only responsibility that comes with that is to change the filter every now and then so it does not become completely plugged up. I think most members on this board are able to handle that, ok.

The stainless steel mesh filters are kind of difficult to clean without pushing contaminates through the wrong side of the media. We used to sell a brand called Mecca. I gave up on them after several services because I thought they created more problems than they solved. I also do not see how they could filter as well as a paper filter. Another thing, it has been shown that having a very effective FF with a bypass is highly beneficial. You really want the best FF you can find. Perhaps using an Amsoil EaO for the full 25,000 miles is the best solution. With the bypass you will never load up the FF. The FF does not load up from 10+ micron particles, they load up from sludge like deposits that you will not get with a bypass filter.

I do know in at least one of my engines, Larry. I'll say ...virtually never. Although I can't prove it in a sensible theoretical model, my observations show that, outside of excessive loading (well over 10k in some usages), that it is most likely when the oil pump is in relief. If you operate very close to the relief setting, you may see the bypass open more often.
