My sister called me on Saturday telling me that after about 20 minutes of driving the tc and stability control warnings came on in her 2012 Cruze (1.4 Turbo, 150k miles). There was no check engine light on. She also said the power steering (electrically assisted) acted like it was going in and out. I felt bad because she just put out 2k to have new timing cover and oil cooler gaskets put in, as well as having the oil pan re-sealed. I told her to drop it off at the shop and use night drop box. She’s on the other side of town and I had no clue where to begin diagnosing this. A search on Cruze forum referred to negative battery cable being bad, loose cables, etc. I talked to her again and she mentions “I think something funky electrical is going on because it cranked slow this morning.” Jackpot. I went to the garage lot with her spare key, took her battery out and took it to Advanced Auto. It checked out bad…one month past 3 year free replacement. Put new battery in and away it goes, no more warning lights. When a simple battery replacement precludes the possibility of 1k plus repairs I consider that a win. Also, an important reminder that in “modern” vehicles a failing battery can bring forth all sorts of bizarre stuff.
