ST 3980 E-core has changed.

I was at Wal-mart the other day and noticed that Champ has indeed changed the 3980 base plate, eliminating the uneeded holes that allow the bypass to function. No more worrying about the bypass opening when it shouldn't. Still no 3387 E-cores, so I didn't purchase one.

I believe that the ST 3387A filters in my area are the new E-Cores.

I will try and check to make sure.

AZ had some value craft 3980s that had only one set of holes also. No 3387s in stock and all the ACs were non-E-cores.

It has no bypass or are the holes just not drilled?

I confirmed early this morning that the ST 3387A is indeed the new E-Core design at the local Walmart.

It has the small Fram type oil entry holes.

There is no by-pass valve in this new design which is good because there not needed for this GM application.

I didnt have anything to compare its size to so I dont know if it is any smaller and if so,how much.

I didnt see a by-pass.If there is one,it is internal somewhere.

I will try and look again but I dont think it has a by-pass.

I think what T is trying to point out is that there probably is the same bypass valve that was in there before, since the bypass/ADBV are integrated. I think that he offered that there is a distinct possilbility that instead of creating a new stand alone ADBV only for this ecore, they would just use a baseplate with one set of holes.

I don't think that you could determine this without cutting it open.

I agree. Without the holes there is in effect no bypass valve even if the same combo nitrile ADBV/bypass valve is used.

I bought a 3387 today. I checked them and all of the GM apps now only have one set of holes. I think the original 3980s with two sets were a screw-up, either at the design level or manufactoring, unlike we were told.

I think my filter site is due for an update.

I checked the 3387A and there does not seem to by any kind of a by-pass in them.

I also checked the 3980 and it DID have the two sets of holes.

Maybe they just havent went through the old stock but the holes were there.

Probably old stock it takes a while, We didn't get E-core 3387s until recently, but others reported them earlier.

You may be right.The Fram filter section is much larger and probably has more turnover.

Most people probably buy the Frams.

The new 3387A does seem to be a bit smaller as far as the can goes.

As small as they are,could this be a problem?
