SSO, summer and thinness?

I have about 6000 Km's on a batch of SSO and I am very impressed. My Kia Sorento has a five liter sump, and as of yet, I have not even had to top up. The Kia pulls great, free revving, starts very easily, all in all, an excellent lubricant. However, my Kia can be run with either 5w-20, 5w30 and 10W-30. We are getting into the warmer months and the question is; is SSO too thin for the summer months.

I like how the Mobil 1 5w30 is a thicker beast, but I just love how my Sorrie runs on SSO.

I also have a 97 Sunfire that has had Mobil 1 5w30 since I got it from the dealership. The engine does like to consume about a litre of oil per oil change interval, roughly 6000 km's. I have been topping up with SSO in it, and low an behold, the consuption has slowed, so SSO will be going in there as well.

But the question is, too thin, or just a classic BITOG member being "Oil Anal"?

Well since you stated "However, my Kia can be run with either 5w-20, 5w30 and 10W-30" and you have been running a 0W-30 (the SSO) you are already running the thickest oil Kia recomends. A 0W-30, 5w30, and a 10W-30 are all pretty much the same once the engine gets up to normal operating temps. Now M1's 30 weight oils may be on the "heavy" end of the 30 weight scale and the Amsoil 30 weight may be on the "lighter" side of the 30 weight spec but I don't have my spec sheets here to look at so its a mute point to say which is which. I guess what I am really trying to say is you love the SSO, your Kia loves the SSO and it looks like your Sunfire is trying to tell you the same thing. Now I am sure Kia recommends the 5W-20 for most uses of your Sorento so with the SSO you should be more than covered with anything you will put your "Sorrie" thru.

If you're talking about regular M1, I doubt it. With all the noise and consumption that oil has caused on this board, I'm thinking it's thinner than Amsoil's 5W-20. Yes I know it says 5w30 on the bottle.

Well, considering it has a HT/HS viscosity of 3.2 and a noack of 8.65, it would survive high temperatures better than a conventional 10w-30. Yea, British Columbia? What's it like, maybe 20 degrees Celsius during a record heat wave!
