There's been talk on a number of message boards websites etc that talk about numerous additions, and activities at Area 51. There has been alot of hypersonic research over the last few years with missiles etc.
It’s a misleading headline. P&W is looking at the J58 design in developing a new engine for hypersonic use. Nowhere does it say they are making the J58 operational again.
a similar headline could have read “supersonic bomber engine being used to power new 737 aircraft” 45 years ago when GE used the F101 core in the CFM56 design.
