Spring Oil Change Game Plan and oil questions

I believe like 2-3 weeks ago I changed the oil of both of my cars, the galant, and cutlass (signature for more information) they both currently have QS Defy 5-30 and about 4-5 weeks ago I changed the oil of my SUV and its MC 5w-20. I live in Chicago and the winter it gets really cold and the summer it gets really hot and to save me some hassle I want to make a gameplan.

On April 1st I want to once again Do an oil change on all three vehicles. I know all vehicles wont even have 500 miles by april 1st. what i want to do is change the oil every 6 months so this is what i have in mind.

change the oil april 1st and change it on October 1st then again on april 1st. disregarding how many miles i put on. i know some of you guys wait like 5-10k OCI but me i want it to have new fresh oil every 6 months.

Now this is what im asking. I was actually impressed with the Defy and i think ive fell in love with Quaker State, and i want to drop Motorcraft just doesn't satisfy me or my truck.

I want to keep using Quaker State on my cars and i want to put QS on my SUV. Here comes the million dollar question.

Can i mix Pennzoil Conventional and Quaker State Conventional 5w30 on both my cars??
Will it do any harm to the engine?
Can it actually benefit?
Should i just erase this idea?

The reason why im asking this is because QS is known for engine lubrication and durability, while Pennzoil Conventional is known for its cleaning agents. yet their both SOPUS products.

on my SUV i actually want to drop the 5W-20 for a 5w30 and also doing the same putting in half of Pennzoil Conventional and half Quaker State Conventional.

im also considering putting just Quaker State Ultimate Durability on my SUV. but i want to get other users opinion.

i know i wont put more than 2000 miles on all 3 vehicles once i do the OC on april 1st.

the reason for doing an OC every 6 months is to avoid having an OC in the Winter

also ima throw another question of topic, how good is a motorcraft Oil Filter? (for my SUV)

and what oil filter would you guys recommend for the two cars?

P.S Should i drop the 5w-20 or change it to 5w30???

If you like the QS, stick with it. Maybe try the Quaker State Ultimate Durability. Don't mix oils with different additive packages.

Pennzoil Ultra, Quaker State Conventional, Quaker State Ultimate Durability, Pennzoil Platinum, are all Shell family oils, mix with confidence at any ratio.

Stick to 5W20 and 0W20, and use Wix filters.

6 month OCI, April 1 Spring when you can get a jack out without it snowing, and October 1 just before Winter.

Use Gumout with Regane, Techron, or Red Line Complete fuel system / injector cleaners March 1, one treatment, so it is completely out of your gas tank before you change the oil as people claim these cleaners, if left in the oil too long, cause elevated Pb (lead) bearing wear.

I like the idea of your game plan. How about this, since you've already changed the oil 2 weeks ago, and will only have about 500 miles on it in April, why not stretch it out to October 1? You'll save $$ and can then implement your plan starting in October. Just a thought. Honestly the oil you have in the sumps now isn't going to hurt the vehicles at all while you wait till October, and you'll save time, money, and resources.

10 year old truck, drop the 20 and go 30 once... I did with my 5.4 ford, no problems, seem to run better. less oil use, no more smoke... If you get all 3 vehicles on the same oil that would be great... bigger savings for you.(I like that AAP PP K and N deal, got me thinkin...) When your QS has a good deal, buy buy buy!!!
Mixing not an issue in my book. Some Castrol edge may co-mingle with my RP in april...
Filters... lotta options out there... once my stash of RP filters gone, I'm going with Fram ultras.
I'm on the same april, oct OCI as you for both... The truck may get a once a year change in june, will know better when I get it out of storage...

5w30 should be fine for any of your vehicles, I don't see anything wrong with mixing the Quaker State Conventional and Pennzoil Conventional but I agree with demarpaint on waiting till october to change again. Theres no sense in dumping virtually new oil so soon.

How about May-for summer,then Nov. going winter and check oil level regularly,I lived in Chicago alsur 3 cars on 6k/6months
OCI.I used synthetic on Nov. then regular oil at May,depends
on my stocks which lately all synthetics,oil filter from k/n,

It appears you want to move to all QS. The Navigator has the 4.6, and I recently saw a thread on here where someone had used Rotella T6 (5w40) with good results, so putting 5w30 into the Navigator should be fine, especially since it's out of warranty.

Seems like you put less than 500 miles per month on the vehicles? With that little use, I'd think you could go with a yearly oil change. At around 6000 miles I'm sure the QS could handle it, but you may want a used oil analysis to make sure. However if you're sure you want to do 6 month changes, your plan sounds fine.

I just decided to do my oil changes in April and October, as well.

The major deciding factor was that the first month of October is the only time we can recycle oil around here.

I've come to realize that replacing coolant every couple years is more important than I first realized when starting to maintain my own vehicle.

Why not go to a quality synthetic such as M-1, Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

IMO....if your by using a synthetic....and doing about 6K a year....you only need to change oil ONCE A YEAR ((October is a good month).

Doing 3K OCI's on syntetic is IMO....a waste of good oil, a waste of $$$, and a waste of time. Any quality synthetic can easily do 6K....and more. Spend a little more $$ up-front...and save $$, time and oil in the long run.

As far as filters go...I would go to a Purolator PureOne, which can easily do 6K.

So let's say I want to run full synthetic on all 3 vehicles. I want to clean my engine and still have my oil durable which is why I want to mix both Quaker State Ultimate Durability and Pennzoil Ultra if I do mix synthetic. For a once a year oil change, or mixing Pennzoil conventional with Quaker State Conventional for 2 oil changes a year which goes back to my April October OCs

And why do you have to "mix"?

Just decide on one brand oil and weight....and forget the mixing. You'll be putting so little mileage on each vehicle, it won't make a difference.

IMO mixing just doesn't make much sense, and can have (or might have) some negative consequences, especially if mixing different bands.

first thing Jam... get that lincoln on 5w30... That engine is solid and should run well with it. get all 3 cars on the same stuff.
Filters you choose... pick a good one, shop for deals and light them up...
I'd skip the whole mixing idea and go with a good Syn... brand of your choice. You'll be doing 3 cars so Start shopping for good deals and buy it in bulk when you get the chance.
your OCI is up to you. Some here will say stretch it out no problem, others like to do it more. once a year or twice a year... split the difference and go 8 or 9 months... When you hit that warm day in winter... It's on!!!
The Sale/ bargain board here is real good!! i've saved a bunch already...
you'll be buying 30 quarts a year, 6 filters, beer and steaks for nutrition... I envy you.

Why are you suggesting that, the first thing he should do, is change his oil to 5w30 for the Lincoln? Ford specs 5w20 for that engine. I have a Mountaineer with that same engine and my manual says 5w20 as well. I have 114k on my Mountaineer running 5w20 and it runs great.

If I was to run a once-a-year OCI I'd change the oil in the early Spring.

That way, you get rid of all the fuel dilution, condensation, and road salt that gets sucked past the air filter.

Then, when you change it in the Spring, you have fresher oil longer, as the oil doesn't take much of a beating in warmer weather.

I been thinking on dumping the 5W-20 and going with 5w30 I just don't see any benefits with the 20. Well the mixing is out of the plan for sure. I'm going to see how the engine looks by looking in the oil hole where the cap goes, if it looks good I,ma Quaker State Ultimate Durability in all 3 vehicles and if I see some weird stuff IMA run PU or should I just run Pennzoil Conventional in the summer to make it clean or cleaner and then Quaker State Conventional for oil durability in the winter.

I switched to the RP 5w30 after reading up alot on lightning and harley truck owner websites. Smoke went away, oil consumption went down and truck ran way better. (my truck tows more than not towing) was it the switch to 30?? not sure... coulda been the RP, or just doing it myself. either way I had great results.
