Speedometer Cable

I have a 1983 Chevrolet El Camino with 368,000 miles and I am noticing that my speedometer cable is making a squeaking noise. The cable goes to the driver's side of the engine into the cruise control. Can I just loosen the connection and apply some kind of grease. I do not want to mess something up and have my speedometer not working.

Is this something I can do myself, or do I need to bring this to a mechanic.

Mori, seriously, I am not going to put auto-rx on a speedometer cable. Auto-Rx cannot do everything.

It's best to take the cable off, . Then the inner cable will come out of the sheath.
Clean it and lightly grease it.
If you can not get the inner cable out of the sheath, a light oil can be applied as you thought.
It will not go down easy. Make a funnel and tape it tight, and pour a reservoir of oil to seep in overnight.
Event this method will work better if the bottom end is loose, to allow flow.

My dad's 1991 toyota pickup does the same thing.It sets out in the weather, and only has 65,000 miles on it. I think it is the weather that causes it. I can't believe, however, that your Chevy has 386,000 miles on it. Must of been one in a million. Does it do any of the following?

Dents?

sometimes dead?

burn oil?

Or just look like a piece of junk?

Have heard graphite lube best for this, as it doesn't attract grime.
