Speeding ticket

Sure it is.

Try doing the 55mph limit on 80/94 in Indiana near the Illinois border. You will be pulled over by cops at best for impeding traffic, quite literally killed at worst.

“A person may not drive a motor vehicle at a slow speed that impedes or blocks the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with the law. A person who is driving at a slow speed so that three (3) or more other vehicles are blocked and cannot pass on the left around the vehicle shall give right-of-way to the other vehicles by pulling off to the right of the right lane at the earliest reasonable opportunity and allowing the blocked vehicles to pass.
"except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with the law"

What is the speed limit? A suggestion?

The above statute would apply up until the speed limit is broken.

Reading the OP, 'seems' a calculation made that 9 mph over in a 75 would be okay. In this instance, turned out to be incorrect. Just life. I too make similar speed type calculations, so not putting myself above it.

As the saying goes, sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. Pun intended.

Well that means that 99% of you are speeding. If you increased the limit to 100, people would complain about 110.

And if there was an accident, whereas the person going 55 was hit by the guy going 85, better believe the guy going 85 is at fault.

Going with the flow of traffic is not a law.
Nah, some speed limits are arbitrary or used for revenue generation by traffic fines. That's a proven fact. Most crashes are because of differences in speed. We have some unusually low 55mph straight highways who's engineers say can do 75 in all weather conditions.

Going with the flow of traffic is a law in many jurisdictions. And state police will pull people over for "impeding the flow of traffic" if you are cruising at 55 in the fast lane... even if that's the speed limit.

In Massachusetts, impeding the flow of traffic is a violation of the Code of Massachusetts Regulations (720 CMR) and the Massachusetts General Laws: 720 CMR 9.06(6) Drivers cannot obstruct the normal flow of traffic on a highway. If a driver is found to be in violation, they may be directed to pull over and wait for traffic to pass.

I go through a county where regardless of the speed limit either side they drop it 10 mph lower - been like that for many years. Has all new and very wide road with no crossings … LEO patrol units lightly marked …

Money generation and speed limit crashes are two different things of course
Most crashes are because of differences in speed.
Sure. But, who is at fault? The one going over the posted speed limit, or the one who is not exceeding it? In others words, the one who is breaking the law, or the one who is following it?

Got pulled over in Tucumcari, New Mexico (I-40) this morning around 6am for doing 84 in a 75, Officer said if I plead guilty it's a $25 fine. Caught me off guard as 1. I haven't been pulled over in 30+ years, And 2. Never heard of a officer making plea deals on the side of the road.

I plead guilty & paid the fine just now online.

Thought being pulled over on an empty highway in the middle of the desert for doing 9 over was a little extreme. But I didn't voice my opinion :)
He’s a dang revenue generator, plain and simple. What a shame that we’ve allowed “peace officers” to become nannies for the State. I’d be surprised if that $25 ends up in the State’s coffers…

Victimless crimes are a big crock of ****.

But that's how it should be, if they allow you to do 75 or 80 that should be the speed limit. not speed limit + a random number over
Actually, federal laws require that every few years they are to do speed studies (or for public requests, and that the speed limit should be set at the 85th percentile of the speeds on that highway. So if the lowest was 70mph and the highest was 90, the speed limit should be set at roughly 85 mph.

As you can tell, there is a disconnect between what is said will be done and what is actually done, again in the name of increasing the State’s revenue in most cases.

On the major roadways I travel in NJ; Garden State Pkwy, NJ Turnpike, Rt 287, I can confidently say that 99 out of 100 cars exceed the limit by significant amounts and the one car that doesn't is a bigger hazard than the speeders. I don't know at what speed the police decide to enforce is, but I have gone past Troopers at 90mph and not get pulled over. I always wonder if the day will someday come where they use EZ Pass to determine your speed and just put a ticket in the mail? Maybe they will start with warnings to give us a chance and let us know they're watching!
I've heard on the Turnpike that Ohio & Illinois already are...

Actually, here in OH, it IS the law-"Speed unreasonable for conditions". Which works the other way when weather is bad...

The quick 25$ fine thing seems like a shake down to me.
If you want to put on the foil hat, lets wait and see how OPs insurance is affected by pleading guilty.
The correct way would have been to plead nothing, hire a local lawyer and have them handle it.
