Probably cheap plugs or maybe it was around salt water or salt in the air? It doesn't look normal but the rest of the engine looks ok. I always like the way outboards stay so clean.

I have used many NGK plugs on boat engines, PWCs, motorcycles, outdoor power equipment both 2 and 4 cycle, autos and trucks and have never seen any of what appears like corrosion on your fresh water use marine outboard. May through November is a very short period of time as well. Some of my NGK plugs have been in use for over 5 years and are stored in unheated garages and sheds.

I wonder if the coating was not up to specification. If you have time would be interesting to send them to NGK to see what their response.

Is it possible the boot is cracked and/or water getting in there?
Have you pulled the plug? Is it the proper coloration as in not overheating on the top cylinder?

Plugs are are pretty much equal on the rich side premixed 50/1 I will send ngk some pictures . The boots look great .
