Just want to add a story from personal experience.
Couple years ago I bought a 1992 Camry with the 2.2 5s-fe. Single owner, mile high maintenance records, ran like a top, etc, etc. selling it because it died suddenly one day on the road and wouldn't start. They didn't drive it much anymore and the clutch started slipping anyways so figured it was time to move on.
Long story short, it had the factory platinum plugs which were worn so badly that it overheated and cause the plug wires to short, which also burnt the distributer contacts leading to the coil melting cracking across the middle which shorted and fried the igniter which then finally took out the ECM.
I tried finding out what was the chicken and which was the egg then which came first, but everything tested bad so I can only say that the worn plugs started the chain reaction of overheating and compromising everything from wires to ECM.
I still have the car and the ecm was 50$ but I couldn't get it shipped to Canada so I had to get it mailed to Montana then do the 13 hour drive to pick it up then 13 hours back home.
No need for me to beat the drum still since the OP made up his mind but just wanted to share a personal experience story.
