Plugs nowadays are pregapped by the smorgasboard of manufacurers and to gently check them for consistancy is all that is nessesary. I feel an argument comming on

LOL! Spark plugs are pregapped but you still have to check them and regap as needed since the plug may fit a variety of cars all with different specs. I always gap plugs before installing. There are plugs (bosch +4 for example and some Iridiums) that you are not supposed to gap, however.

Whatever gapper you use, never use one that prys against the center electrode to set a gap. The gapper with the "T" slot that grabs the ground electrode by itself is fine. Prying on/side loading the center electrode on the newer platinum/iridium plugs can cause all kinds of microfractures in the porcelain that cause problems after repeated heat/cool cycles.

On the older plugs with larger diameter electrodes, you can get away with a bit more rough treatment.

I still check pre-gapped plugs because they could get dropped during shipping etc...

Any ways I have a very old champ plug gapper from the early 90s I still use today. I use it often in my jeep that I use copper plugs that are not pre-gapped.

Wire type is reccomended in my service manuals however.
