Sound on the right/passenger side when wheels turn

Hi everyone,

I drive a B17 ( 2013 - 2019) 2015 nissan sentra sr.

Everyday for a week now,

For the first few minutes, I hear a noise at every turn of the wheels. It's usually louder in the first few minutes and gets quieter.

It could be front or back or both.

In the attached video, it sounds quieter already. You have to raise the volume and pay attention to the sound.

Can you identify this sound?

Edit: I also noticed, using a borescope, that the wear pattern of the outside rear right ( passenger side) is not good. The pad is not flat.

Tough to tell. If that knock came from hitting a bump? I’d lean towards stab link. If it’s happening while turning the wheel at a standstill then I’d say strut bearing. These cars aren’t complicated by any means. Run it up on ramps and look for a torn rubber boot somewhere. If you don’t have access to ramps then take it to an independent and let them have a look. Avoid the dealer, unless you want an estimate for twice what the cars worth.

It's not a knock it's a scrapping noise.

I am referring to the wheels on the ground. Not the steering wheel.

If scraping, I cannot hear anything in the video though, could be the dust shield got bent into the rotor. Maybe check that or the other thought i have for noises at axles is bearings going bad. Good luck and dont take it to a dealership, support a local friend or mechanic.

At about 4 seconds you can hear it, though it's not clear enough.

I will make another video as soon as I start driving and add it later during the day.

I will check the dust shield.

I try to avoid the dealership except for transmission service.

I don't have a friend that could help.
I will try to find a local shop.
2 of the local ones have scammed me.

To me, it sounds like a wheel bearing starting to fail as a result of loss of grease and subsequent wear. The cyclical nature of the slight grinding sound should increase in frequency as the car's speed increases.

Edit: I also noticed, using a borescope, that the wear pattern of the outside rear right ( passenger side) is not good. The pad is not flat.

^^^^Based upon your last edit shown in italics above, I think your right rear brake caliper is sticking...possibly due to gummed up floating caliper slide pins.

I had a scraping when I hit a bump over the winter and it drove me nuts. Once it warmed enough I found out it was a loose heat shield. Not how a loose heat shield typically acts. Nissan and just about every maker is famous for this. Harbor freight sells metal zip ties and it was a perfect fix. If it’s a scrape it should be an easy find.

The sound on the second video seems more "metallic" than the first video. Very possible that it could be a bent dust shield as suggested by @wlk in Post #6.

Can the bent dust shield cause my brake pads to wear unevenly as mentioned in my edit?

I went to one mechanic who told me that my rotors are warped. They didn't even bother to take the wheel off to look at the rotor and pads.

They are okay for replacing parts but I don't trust their diagnostics.

Once they had me replace a lower control are, when my issue was sway bar links.

I had to find the issue myself, buy the parts and ask them to replace them

No, the uneven wear is typically caused by a sticking caliper (either slide pins or piston).

To better reproduce your sound, I found indoor parking structure the best. Go with a friend to drive in loop inside an indoor parking structure, preferably underground so the sound would bounce back, then have your friend stand outside while you drive, and record, and go in both clockwise and counter clockwise.

I did that and isolate a sound I had to a wheel bearing on one side, and only reproduced when there's enough speed / weight transfer.

Yours do sound like a wheel bearing to me. Try indoor underground parking and turn at various speed.

In that case, it may be something you should just tolerate till it gets worse and can be diagnosed more easily.
