Songs that you simply never liked? Or can't stand.

If you don't like the Beatles, you simply don't like music...
I even took a full blown class at ASU on the Beatles. Can’t stand it.

All their songs have the same mind numbing tune to them. And I get it, they were made a long time ago, but the sound quality is terrible. It hurts my ears because it’s so monotone. Other music from that time period sounds fine, so I don’t know if they just used crappy recording equipment or what.

Monotone? I guess you don't hear harmonies...

I try to avoid not liking songs. If I hear a song that a lot of people like, and my first reaction is to not like it, I try my best to listen to that song or genre long enough to understand why people like it. It helps a lot with identifying non-obvious prejudices I might have built into my mind.

For a long time, I couldn't like mumble rap. I forced myself to listen to it for several months, and now have a list of favorite songs and artists and can stand listening to all mumble rap.

But, I will have to admit, I've been working on country western music for years and still can't quite get into it. I think it's the generic bland potato formula for most of the songs that puts me off. Although some of the lyrics can be catchy and easy to sing along to. :)

Dare you post what you do like? I'll guarantee isn't not even music compared to the Beatles, who most people consider to be the best group in music history...

"Most people" I assume is a list primarily comprised of people significantly older than the two people you are engaging with. Even my parents don't listen to the Beetles and they are pushing 70.

There's a running thread on what people are listening to right now, you can get a pretty decent sense of what my music taste looks like from my entries in that thread. They are extremely varied and cross numerous genres.

"Taste" is extremely subjective. Justin Bieber is an incredibly popular artist, as is Lady Gaga. That's what "pop" music is by definition: Popular. That doesn't make it good. That the Beetles were the Backstreet Boys of your era does nothing to suggest that your music taste is more refined or cultured than those of us who don't share that view. I'll sit down and listen to anything from classical to metal depending on my mood and I've spent significant sums of money on audio gear to ensure I'm getting an immersive experience.

Classical is probably the only genre that has truly transcended centuries and maintained a position of relevance. This will likely continue long after we are dead and gone.

Yeah, the Beetles are for sure a pop band of their time. I hardly hear any of their songs being played today.

I was born in the late 70's and grew up in the 80's thinking Metallica was the most talented band in history. Looking back, they weren't so much as talented in a musical way (Lars wasn't very good live at the drums) as they were a defining aspect of my childhood.

I was too young to experience early Metallica when it was current, the black album came out around the time music started to make sense to me and gain significance.

Metallica's success I think hinged on their ability to bridge pop and metal. The fact they had some very catchy songs sealed the deal. Enter Sandman is of course notorious, as was the case with several entries from the black album. If you ask "Average Joe" they'll probably list those as the best Metallica songs. You ask a Metallica fan however, and you'll get a very different answer depending on their taste and tolerance of Metallica's very varied career. Fade to Black is of course a typical favourite, and it was a defining song for many upcoming artists, impressing long and deep on that whole genre. Some of their later stuff is, to me, quite good though. I like many entries from Load, Reload...etc. Bands evolve, styles change, it's our choice whether to embrace that change or recoil from it. I've chosen the former.

So you haven't tuned in to the Beatles Channel on Sirius XM?

Besides rap, TOTO is my least fav.

Here's what my girlfriend's dad said the reason why everyone freaked over The Beatles. He was 16 in 1967,so he was the perfect age to be right in the middle of it. He said all there was to listen to pretty much was boring folk music like Peter Paul and Mary, plus the leftover doo-wop vocal groups trying to still hang on. Then suddenly there was this wild beat-rock no one ever heard before from England. He said he and his friends were in total awe sitting in from of the TV that night when they first hit America on the Ed Sullivan show. He and his friends went out and immediately bought instruments and taught themselves how to play, forces a band, playing in their parents' garages and at their high school during lunch hour. They even cut a 45 on the Century label in 1969. They have an album on reel to reel that never got released.

He still plays with various bands to this day.

I've heard the same.. they were saying, the mass of most people simply "Never heard anything like it" and the reaction was electric.

I try to avoid generalizing but with the Beatles that seems to be the case. Elvis is widely criticized for simply "ripping off" "black" music. Not sure how true that is but I *could* believe that.

FWIW, it's "Beatles" not "Beetles"...
