After 800 miles since switching to 5w30 (allowed per specifications) from 5w20 (main recommendation) to see if the slightly diesel-like Hyundai d.i. 2.4 engine sound would be muffled, the results are in. For the first, approximately, 500 miles, it seemed to really quiet things down. I even posted a thread as a result of the noticeable difference. Since then, the same 'patented' engine sound is absolutely the same as the previous drain and FF 5w20. To be honest, I've learned to like it (or got used to it).

I changed mine over to QS Ultimate Durability 10w30 and noticed a pretty nice change in that sound. It seemed to help for about 3 or 4 thousand miles then it went back to sounding like it used to. Ill probably stick with the 5/10 W30 synthetics in mine.

I doubt that's what it means but for the sake of argument, Castrol EDGE 5w30. Or was that Citgo Superguard.... whistle

Some have reported 0w oils make the GDI run smooth and quiet. I didn't like 10w30 the one time I used it. The car was less zippy.

Your right Merk! He should get a 40 weight in that ASAP! Only joking of course. If it were my car I would use a 5w20 synthetic with confidence, engine noise does not = engine wear. Your choice is fine, no way it sheered to a 20 weight that quickly. The new additives of the different oil may have laid down, and they are not as noise cancelling as the previous oils additives, just a guess.

I've got a few 5w30 GTX synblnd and EDGE jugs left, might mix those and use in the 2.0T. For the 2.4, I was thinking 5w20 flavors of GTX Synblnd, MC or SuperTech, maybe even PYB. We'll see.

I have noticed that 5w30 makes a marked difference in terms of engine smoothness and quietness at higher rpms. 5w20 make me feel my engine is losing metal with every rev laugh

I think you should keep trying different brands of 5w-30 until you find one where the quietness lasts long enough for your liking. Some brands can be louder than others. The additive packs that each brands use will indeed create different levels of auditory engine acoustics.

Lol, FORTUNATELY that is not the case. Wemay....of those choices, I would go with PYB, arguably the best conventional out there. However, I would use a synthetic since it is DI. A good synthetic should leave fewer deposits behind. An extra $10 per OCI is not much for peace of mind and warm fuzzies.

Thanks Gregk24, I will keep all of that in-mind.

Merk likes thicker than 5w-30, but only almost imperceptibly thicker. In truth, an A3/B4 oil would scare the pants off him. wink

PYB yes, not sure about 10w30 though. 5w20 and 5w30, still up in the air. I've got a long way to go yet.

PYB 5w20 and 5w30 did not make my noisy Subaru as quiet as the 10w30. The 10w30 is outstanding.

...about sums it up. After all these experiments are over, I have a feeling I'll be returning to Valvoline. Synpwr for 2.0T and vwb for the 2.4.
